ASUU: Gbajabiamila announces date of education summit

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has disclosed that the education summit on the state of tertiary education in Nigeria will hold on November 22 and 23.

Mr Gbajabiamila, in his welcome remarks at the resumption of plenary on Monday, said the summit will “begin the long overdue national conversation.”

Strike: ASUU not responsible for decay in public universities – Chairman

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that the union is not responsible for the current decay in public universities in the country.

Associate Prof. Lazarus Maigoro, chairman of the union at the University of Jos, stated this during a peaceful protest organised on Tuesday in Jos.

ASUU begins protest, declares lecture free days over half-salary

The Academic Staff Union Of Universities, ASUU, will on Tuesday (today) begin protest over the half-salary paid to them by the Federal Government in October this year.

The union has also declared lecturer free days in its branches across the country in a bid to draw the attention of Nigerians to the move by the Government.

Fed Poly Ado-Ekiti to honour Ooni, Fashola, Afe Babalola’s wife at convocation

An aggregate of 511 out of the 13,677 graduates of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti will bag distinction at its combined 18th convocation ceremonies slated for November 19, 2022.

Similarly, a former Lagos State governor and Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi are to be garlanded with the Fellowship Awards of the institution during the ceremony.

Lagos Digital Summit convener calls for more tech-focused education syllabus in Nigeria

In the build up to the 2022 Lagos Digital Summit, computer scientist Adewale Adetona, better known as ISlimfit, has urged the Nigerian government to adopt more technology-focused academic syllabus; from elementary level to tertiary education.

Pandemic still affecting UK students’ mental health, says helpline

The pandemic is still taking its toll on UK university students’ mental health, experts are warning, as figures show that growing numbers are seeking help from peer-run helplines for anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.

Nightline, which is staffed by anonymous student volunteers, said it had recorded a 51.4% increase in calls in 2020-21, and that this has grown since, with early data suggesting numbers for 2021-22 were 30% higher, and up a further 23% since the new academic year began.

Entrepreneurship education’ll make students fit for to labour market –Rasheed

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, has reiterated that the development of an Entrepreneurship Education programme in the Nigerian University System (NUS) would help prepare students to be fit-for-purpose in the labour market.

He stated this when the commission in partnership with the British Council (BC) kick-started a two-day brainstorming session with Directors of Entrepreneurship Centers of Nigerian universities, aimed at achieving a more productive university education system.

Don’t expunge sex education from Nigerian schools, feminists warn

The Nigerian Feminist Forum (NFF) has said Sex Education in Nigerian School Curricula is a Public Health and Holistic Wellbeing Right of Young People and should therefore not be expunged from schools.

The Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu had recently directed the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to review the basic education curriculum and expunge any sexual education content being used in schools in Nigeria.

Good leaders solution to insecurity — MTU

The Mountain Top University, Ogun State, has advised the Nigerian governments to curtail and manage the consequences of violence.

US records 80% rise in international student enrolment

The 2022 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange has said new international student enrolment in the United States has increased by 80 per cent.

The Open Doors Report made available to The PUNCH stated that the report indicated that there was a 12.3 per cent increase in the number of students from Nigeria studying in the United States for the 2021/2022 academic year.
