Uniben alumni honours Igini
Former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Mike Igini, yesterday, received an award of excellence from the Alumni Association of the University of Benin, Edo State.
The event which took place at the Banquet Hall of Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, was in recognition of Igini’s contributions to the electoral process in Nigeria as well as his exploits in the legal profession.
According to the association’s chairman, Stephen Onojomete, the award was in recognition of Igini’s outstanding achievements in the legal profession, as well as his contributions to the improved electoral reforms in Nigeria. “And as an ambassador of the Uniben family,” he added.
In his acceptance speech, Igini noted that it has become a herculean task to do the right thing in contemporary times but attributed his achievements to the culture and norms imbued in him by the University of Benin.

Engage govts on education, ABSU VC urges alumni
The Vice-chancellor of the Abia State University, Uturu, Professor Onyemachi Ogbulu, has said alumni associations should engage the Nigerian government on policies that relate to education.
The VC, represented by a professor of Zoology, Abia State University, Solomon Umeham, disclosed this at the seminar of the Abia State University Legends Alumni Association, Lagos Chapter, themed “Role of Alumni Associations in Nigeria’s Education System.”

Kwankwaso to Atiku: Reduce your varsity fees so Nigerians can access education
Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso on Sunday charged his counterpart in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar to reduce the school fees for American University of Nigeria The American University of Nigeria (AUN), a private university the latter established in Yola the capital of Adamawa.
Kwankwanso made the remarks while answering a questions on ways to improve Nigeria’s education sector at the ongoing at a town hall meeting organized by Arise TV, Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, in partnership with Vanguard Newspapers.

It was a battle of ideas, yesterday, at the third in a series town hall meeting, organised by the Arise News Channel and its partners, where three of the leading presidential candidates – the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s Rabiu Kwankwaso – took on four critical issues of poverty, education, health and human capital development as central to the growth and development of the country, preparatory to the 2023 general election.
ATIKU ABUBAKAR:
Atiku, while speaking to Nigerians, assured the people that if elected president next year, his administration would ensure that poverty rate in the country was reduced to the barest minimum.
The PDP candidate, who urged Nigerians to be fair to the PDP, said when the party was in power, the poverty rate wasn’t as high as it was presently, adding also that he would removed the bottlenecks stifling access to funds by tertiary institutions, as part of ways to addressing recurring strike action by public universities’ lecturers.
PETER OBI:
Espousing his ideas, Obi hinted at his commitment to channel petroleum subsidy resources towards proper funding of health, education and human capital development.
This was even as he blamed the federal government over the continued diversion of local government allocation by state governments, saying the government at the central had in the last decade failed to live up to its constitutional responsibility.

Strike: Atiku Promises to Remove Bottlenecks in Education Sector
The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday promised to ensure removal of bottlenecks stifling access to funds by tertiary institutions, if elected president in 2023.
Atiku who gave the assurance at the Arise TV presidential town hall series III Sunday evening said there’s need to avoid these bottlenecks.
According to him, the current system has bottlenecks because when government releases funding for universities it goes to another agency, that agency stifles the universities from getting these funds.
