Rewane, Oyedele oppose ASUU’s 10% education tax
Tax experts have faulted the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ proposed increase in the Tertiary Education Tax from three per cent to 10 per cent tax. According to them, toeing this path would hurt private firms which were already overburdened with taxes.
The ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osedeke, recently proposed an increase in the education tax from three to 10 per cent to fund infrastructure in Nigeria’s universities.
“In 1992 when we had a disagreement with the government, the government said we should look for other ways of getting funding. That was how TETfund came. This time around, the government is saying there is no money to fund it and it is talking about using tuition to raise money. How will a man earning N30,000 be able to afford it? Why not take 10 per cent of big companies and inject into the education system so that you have a better and free country?” Osedeke had said in an Arise TV interview monitored by The PUNCH.

Columbia University names Hillary Clinton professor
Former First Lady of the United States and former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has been appointed a Professor of Practice at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
Hillary is also a Presidential Fellow at Columbia World Projects. President Clinton felicitated his wife and CU shortly after Columbia University’s President, Lee Bollinger, made the announcement.

You graduated as the overall best student in the 2022 Bar Final Examinations at the Nigerian Law School. How do you feel about this achievement?
I got into the University of Ilorin in 2015 and graduated in 2021, got into the Nigerian Law School, Yenagoa Campus on November 29, 2021, and graduated on December 7, 2022. I felt very good, very happy. When I found out that I was the overall best student, I was so surprised; I almost couldn’t believe it, it was such a happy moment.

Tuition hike: NANS seeks Buhari’s ‘fatherly’ intervention
The National Association of Nigerian Students has expressed strong opposition to the alleged plans by federal universities in the country to increase, by 200 per cent, their tuitions and various other charges from this year, calling on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to, “as a matter of urgency, intervene and stop the plan before it degenerates into a crisis in the nation’s ivory towers”.
The PUNCH reports that NANS is the umbrella body of all Nigerian students in tertiary schools both at home and in the diaspora and has about 50 million members globally.

NGO advises govt on edutech
Against the backdrop that Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children in the world, a Civil Society Organisation; Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative has urged stakeholders to work together and make education technology in the country a reality for all students.
Global Director of BBYDI, Abideen Olasupo, who made the call on Thursday at the unveiling of the issue brief fact sheet and research titled, “Harnessing education technology in Africa: Scoping study,” stressed the need to embrace the future of education and use it to create a brighter, more equitable world for all.
He said, Nigeria, according to the World Bank, experienced a significant expansion in access to education during the last few decades, stressing that the country still had the highest number of out-of-school children in the world.

Make valuable plans for teachers, educators tell govt
Basic education practitioners have called on the government to make valuable plans for practitioners in the education sector.
In an interview with The PUNCH, CEO, Florishgate Consult, Mrs Dideolu Adekogbe, said the request by the United Kingdom for Nigerian teachers showed that Nigerian teachers were competent but not taken care of by the government.
She said, “The practitioners from the medical sector have always been on mass exodus and teachers have also been going but this is the most surprising, not with this open letter.

Don proffers strategies to tackle malaria parasites
A Professor of Cellular and Molecular Parasitology, Roseangela Nwuba, has identified persistence and wise intelligence information as the strategies needed to eliminate malaria parasites in the country.
Nwuba, who stated this at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, noted that defeating malaria parasites is not a mirage, adding that success might be attained with consistent work by scientists and researchers.

Nobody can promise there will be no strike in 2023 -Ex ASUU president
A former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi has revealed that a fresh strike by lecturers of public universities in the country cannot be ruled out in 2023.
Ogunyemi disclosed this on Saturday while featuring on Channels TV’s 2022: In Retrospect, an End-Of-Year special programme.
Recall that ASUU embarked on industrial action that lasted over eight months in 2022 following demands for improved welfare and owed earned allowances, among others.

Government, Stakeholders Urged To Invest In Education Technology
Governments and stakeholders in education sector have been urged to invest in education technology (Edtech), especially in emergency situations, to make education more accessible and effective to students.
Speaking during unveiling of factsheet and research, titled “HARNESSING EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY IN AFRICA: SCOPING STUDY”, a group of young Nigerians with concerns for educational advancement, under the aegis of the Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI), said that Edtech allows for use of innovative tools and techniques that can enhance learning experience and improve student outcomes.

Nigerian schools: Flogged for speaking my mother tongue
Nigeria says it wants primary school teachers to conduct lessons in local languages instead of English, which is currently used. But how practical is that in a country where more than 600 different tongues are spoken?
Kareem Abiodun Habeebullah, whose mother tongue is Yoruba, was just a secondary school student when he was whipped in class for not speaking in English.
“When I was growing up, I was struggling to speak English,” he tells the BBC. “There was a particular class,” he says, recalling the incident in 2010. The teacher called him up to answer a question, and he was stumped.
“I know the answer but I can only respond with my mother language,” he remembers saying.
