FUTA student commits suicide over fraud allegation

Details emerged, yesterday, why a 300-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Joseph Olona, took his own life.
The Guardian gathered that Olona, who hanged himself in his room, was the financial secretary of the department of Industrial Design. He was alleged to have mismanaged departmental dues in his possession.
The deceased student, who owned a clothing brand called ‘Tart Angles,’ committed suicide on Saturday in his off-campus lodge in Aule area of Akure, after he was said to have slipped into depression over the issue.

JAMB registers 92, 490 candidates for 2023 UTME
Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has registered 92, 490 candidates to sit for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
JAMB said that 67, 328 candidates had so far registered to sit for its mock examination.
The board made this known in its Weekly Bulletin from the Office of the Registrar on Monday in Abuja.

In drought-stricken Cabo Verde, UN chief finds hope for creating sustainable oasis
New York, USA, 23 January 2023-/The Secretary-General spent Sunday travelling through the diverse and varied landscapes of Santo Antão, where, after five years of intense drought, several development projects supported by the United Nations are helping to transform the agricultural sector of this westernmost island of Cabo Verde.
For hours, António Guterres’ car had moved along a sinuous road, which opened against an arid landscape, but then one last curve, and a few hundred feet up a hill, the view outside his window bursts into myriad shades of green, as small terraces supported by stone walls filled with banana trees, palms and sugar cane, came into view, with silvery water streams flickering in the distance.

UNILAG suspends admission of students for two courses into 2023 session
University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced that there will not be an admission of students to two programmes for the 2023 academic session.
UNILAG registrar Oladejo Azeez made the disclosure in a statement on the tertiary institution’s website.
“All prospective UTME and Direct Entry candidates for the 2023 admission exercise should please note that the University of Lagos will not run two programmes, namely: Biochemistry and Petroleum & Gas Engineering. Hence, there will be no admission into the two programmes.
“Candidates are hereby advised not to choose any of these two programmes, and those who have done so should change to other programmes.”
