The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Prof Odunayo Adebooye, has assured the institution’s readiness to adopt any recommendation that will enhance the pursuit of the corporate mandate of teaching, research and community service.

The Vice-Chancellor made the assurance while declaring open,the 3rd International Sustainable Development Dialogue organised by the Global Affairs and Sustainability Development Institute (GASDI) in conjunction with UNIOSUN, the African Network of Environmental Humanities, (ANEH), and Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC), Munich Germany at the Campus of the institution.

A Professor of Nomadic Architecture and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, Adedeji Daramola, has offered some tips that can help Nigeria to put a permanent end to the frequent conflict between farmers and herders in the country.

He listed, among others, the introduction of farmers and livestock insurance policies as it is being practiced in India, Ethiopia, and Kenya, the inclusion of both farmers and herders in policymaking on issues that concern them, and the implementation of the report of the recent research carried out on this subject at the University of Ilorin and the Centre for Architectural Research and Development Overseas (CARDO), Newcastle University, United Kingdom, as the tips.

AS part of its contributions to produce fit-for-purpose graduates in the country, Sterling Bank Plc has given out over N15 billion as loans to students and school owners across the country in the last five years.

FG to take 2023 reading culture campaign to hinterland

WORRIED by the poor reading culture among youths, the Federal Government has said that the focus of this year’s readership promotion campaign is to get to the “hard-to-reach” rural areas on the need to encourage the children to read.

BYOD is cost-effective initiative —JAMB

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has explained why it plans to introduce the “Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD)” initiative in the conduct of the annual Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Board said that the initiative is aimed at reducing the cost of administering the UTME.

Group trains selected 45 secondary school teachers on improved computer skills

A non-government organisation, Webfala Digital Skills For All Initiative has organised a one-day training workshop for selected 45 teachers of both public and private secondary schools in Kwara State to equip them with computer skills and art of imparting knowledge.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop in Ilorin on Thursday last week, the executive director of Webfala Digital Skills Initiative, Mrs Nafisat Bakare, said that the workshop which is in collaboration with a United States’ organisation, Scratch Foundation, was meant to equip teachers with necessary tools and knowledge to empower their students with what they need to excel in the future.

No employer can ban workers from embarking on strike —NUT

LAGOS State chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Hassan Akintoye, has made it clear that no employer of labour, either in the public, private sector or anywhere globally has the legal right to ban workers under its employment from embarking on strike.

He said strikes remain potent tool and last resort for workers to press home their demands from their employers.

THE vice chancellor of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, has promised that the state-owned institution will continue to produce first-rate graduates under his watch.

Agboola stated this recently during his inauguration as the 11th vice chancellor of the 40-year-old institution, held at the OGD Lecture Hall of the university.

Babcock University rewards student with 357 JAMB score, others

Babcock University, Ilisan- Remo, Ogun State, has rewarded Emmanuel Oluwanifemi, who scored the highest mark (357 out of 400) in the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) among the newly admitted students with certificate of excellence.

The institution also rewarded Eniola Kujenya, Adigwu Isaac and Osaite Arigbe-Osula, who scored 14 out of 15 points in their 2022 JUPEB programme. Also rwarded is Chukwuemeka Anene, who had the highest CGPA of 4. 76 out of 5.0 in the university’s pre-degree programme with certificates of excellence

Newly licensed varsity, Sam Maris, takes off in Ondo, commences admission process

Barely four weeks after it was granted operational licence by the Federal Government, SAM MARIS University, Supare Akoko, Ondo State, has commenced admission process for the 2023/2024 academic session.

Sam Maris and 36 other private universities were on May 15 approved and granted operational licences by the Federal Government to commence academic operations.

Influx of fake Casio calculators, education materials worries stakeholders

The Managing Director, SKLD Integrated Services Limited, Mrs Temilola Adepetun, has expressed concern over the increased number of fake calculators and education products in circulation and called on the government to sanitise the system to discourage the practice.

Adepetun lamented fake calculators being imported into the country. Speaking at a conference to showcase Casio’s efforts in advancing education within Nigeria, Adepetun said the country has turned into a dumping ground for fake products.

NAS inducts UNIMED VC, Fatusi, nine others as fellows

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Ondo State, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, and nine other scholars have been inducted as fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), Abuja.

Siemens Stiftung, others train 300 students on IT, STEM

As part of its effort to promote digitalisation in the lives of youths in Nigeria, Siemens Stiftung in partnership with Empowering African Through Education Initiative (EAE) and others, have trained about 300 high school students and high school graduates in a first of its kind programme called, ‘Be-MINT’.

Rector pledges to repackage academic, skills devt programmes

The new Rector of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Adedotun Abdul has pledged to repackage all academic and skills development programmes of the college.

Abdul, who disclosed this in his inaugural address, also unveiled the five-point agenda of his administration for the next five years. He coined the five developmental project as ERECT meaning Empower the entire workforce in the college, by enhancing staff welfare; Repackage all academic and skills development programmes by creating industry advisory committee and set up STBI hubs; Consolidate and Expand all the sources of Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) of the college and Tap into the national and international grant and endowment for funding vital infrastructures.

The Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Kola Daisi University, Ibadan, Prof. Olajumoke Morenikeji, has urged the Federal Government to show greater commitment to education by increasing the budgetary allocation to the sector.

Morenikeji also urged the new administration to prioritise the welfare of lecturers and payment of the eight-month outstanding salaries of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given approval to Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, to run Human Physiology and Human Anatomy programmes at the undergraduate level.

In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor and signed by the commission’s Director of Academic Planning, Dr Biodun Saliu, the approval followed the resource verification exercise conducted by the Commission in April 2023.

Isolo Senior High School student emerges best In essay competition

Precious Ohenwam Okpe, a Senior Secondary School one student of the Isolo Senior High School emerged best at the yearly Four-Way Test Essay Competition, organised by the Rotary Club of Isolo.

About 10 schools participated in the event, which also featured the 2023 new generation conference held at Isolo City Hall, Lagos. At the competition, which comprised essay writing and oral presentation, 14-year old Okpe defeated Aweda Demilade and Okesanjo Opeyemi, both of Ansar-ud-deen College, Isolo to 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

AAU students protest over 300% fee hike, demand VC’s sack

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has protested an over 300 per cent increment in school fees at the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University, (AAU) Ekpoma.

The students, while at the premises of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State Council, demanded immediate review of the fees for peace to reign.

Catholic Bishops reject establishment of National Council of Christian Education

A bill to establish the National Council of Christian Education has been rejected by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, arguing that the proposed law violates sections 10 and 42(3) of Nigeria’s Constitution.

The bishops tasked the Christian Association of Nigeria, which originally pushed for the bill at the National Assembly, to promote legislation that decisively addresses unprovoked attacks on Christians in the North, among others, rather than promoting a bill that violates the secular character of Nigeria.

Six inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Suleja, Niger State, have regained their freedom courtesy of six students of Jewels Leading Light Academy, Abuja.
