Greensprings students get Top in Country award six years in row

Four graduates of Greensprings School, Emmanuela Ilok, Oreoluwa Moradeyo, Uwadiae Guobadia, and Kosisochukwu Okoye, have been honoured for winning the ‘Top in Country’ award in five subjects in the recently released 2022 International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) results.

The feat made it the sixth consecutive time, since 2016, that Greensprings students would be awarded Top in Country in various subjects.

Nigeria’s Simi Nwogugu, Chief Executive Officer of JA Africa, has been named winner of the Africa Education Medal 2023.

Provost canvasses curriculum overhaul, retraining of teachers for national devt

Provost, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, Prof. Kamoru Olayiwola Usman, has called for a holistic review of Nigeria’s academic curriculum in line with current realities for the country to attain development.

Usman, a Professor of Mathematics and National President of Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), in an interview with The Guardian, said the current curriculum is outdated and could hardly meet industry needs.

Toyosi Akure Foundation (TAF), based in America, has urged President Bola Tinubu to make the primary education sector a top priority, as the future of the country depends on it.

TAF founder, Toyosi Akure, gave the charge at the flag-off of the payment of common entrance examination fees for primary six students in Yagba West Local Council of Kogi State, and inauguration of the implementation committee.

Expert urges private sector investment in education

To complement government efforts in funding education, Tutor General/ Permanent Secretary, Education District 111 in Lagos State, Idowu Oyetola, has urged corporate organisations to support the sector through their corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects.

Oyetola, who spoke at the inauguration of refurbished science laboratories of Dolphin Senior High School, by Ernst Young (EY), described education as an investment, which the government cannot fund alone.

ITF converts five skills training centres to innovation, entrepreneurial hubs

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) is converting five skills training centres (STC) to innovation and entrepreneurship to reduce unemployment.
The concerned centres are located in Lagos, Kano, Kogi, Abuja, and Plateau, even as it said vocational wings attached to its area offices would also be captured.

Adeleke University gets NUC’s nod to run 15 additional programmes

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given approval to Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State to run 15 additional full-time mode programmes; 10 in the undergraduate and five in the postgraduate cadres respectively.

According to a letter addressed to the vice chancellor by the commission’s Director of Academic Planning, Dr Biodun Saliu, the approval followed a resource verification visit by a panel of experts from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to the institution.

Sanwo-Olu tasks new LASUSTECH deputy VCs on performance

Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the appointment of professors Abiodun Akinpelu Denloye and Basirat Olushola Oladipupo as the substantive deputy vice chancellors of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), located in Ikorodu.

Denloye will be in charge of academic matters while the Oladipupo will be in charge of administration.

Librarians call for stakeholders’ collaboration on reading culture revival

The national chairman of Nigeria Library Association (NLA) Mr Dominic Omokaro, has called on stakeholders to liaise with the association to revive and promote the reading culture in the country.

Omokaro, who observed that people are shifting focus from reading, stated this during the 61st national conference and annual general meeting of the association in Akure, Ondo State.

Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede has said that brain drain and use of outdated curricula are still major challenges militating against delivery of quality higher education in Nigeria and other African countries.

He has also made a case for a robust higher education sector in Africa.

Nigerian varsities, others not producing enough skilled manpower to support digital economy —TETFund boss

The executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc. Sonny Echono has lamented that universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria are not producing enough skilled manpower to transition to the digital economy and service the nation’s population of over 220 million.

He, therefore, expressed the determination of the fund to bridge the digital skills gap between the industries and academy, saying it was unfortunate that even the teaching staff and non-teaching staff do not possess the digital skills to function effectively today.
