Experts advocate reintroduction of HSC to bridge admission gap

Stakeholders in the education sector have called on the Federal Government to reintroduce the Higher School Certificate (HSC) into the school system to address some of the challenges militating against learning and bridge gaps in the sector.

HSC, also known as the Sixth Form or A’ Level, was part of the nation’s 6-5-2-3 education policy, which allowed students to qualify for direct admission into university, but in 1973, the educational system was updated to the 6-3-3-4 (Six years primary, three years junior secondary, three years of senior secondary and four years tertiary education) similar to the American system.

Educationist urges schools to combine academics with morals

The Founder, City of Knowledge Academy (CKA), Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Dr. Mosun Bello-Olusoga, has declared that the only way to get the best out of youths is to combine academic excellence with morals.

At a press briefing to herald the 10th anniversary of the school, Bello-Olusoga said the combination of both informed her decision to establish the school.

UNIMED partners WACS to train surgeons in Nigeria, West Africa

The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) to enable resident surgeons from Nigeria and across West Africa to undergo doctoral programmes in the institution.

Speaking after signing the MoU at WACS Permanent Secretariat, Yaba, Lagos, UNIMED Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, said the collaboration would empower the institution to serve as a training ground for doctors undergoing residency training and also conduct research for Ph.D. dissertations.

Adeboye pledges RECTEM’s commitment to raising champions

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Proprietor, Redeemer’s College of Technology and Management (RECTEM), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has assured that the college would continue to raise champions in knowledge, skills acquisition and morality.

For the development and progress of the nation, Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys’ Association (AGSOBA) has tasked President Bola Tinubu on quality and qualitative education, 24-hour electricity supply, and infrastructural development.

The President General of the association, Olurotimi Oduntan, who made the plea while addressing journalists on activities lined up for its 115th anniversary, said if the key development factors are addressed, the country would experience the needed change.

An environment expert, Mr Victor Imevbore has warned that Nigeria may miss the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) if it fails to address the multifaceted challenges plaguing the country.

UNICEF, SUBEB partner to tackle out-of-school menace

Bauchi Field Office of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) in conjunction with the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has designed a special education system which has accommodated out of school children who returned to school.

Under the system called Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), the children, irrespective of the class from which they stopped going to school, are put together in one classroom and taught basic education.

TETFund charges tertiary institutions on innovation, viable research

THE Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has charged tertiary institutions on the need to be innovative while also conducting viable research that would make them relevant to the society.

The executive secretary of TETFund, Mr Sonny Echono, gave the charge at a closing ceremony in Abuja, where more than 18 polytechnics lecturers, successfully completed a training programme on Research for Impact (R4i) initiative organised by the fund.
