ASUU, FG showdown looms over 40% revenue deduction from varsities

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is awaiting formal communication on a decision by the Federal Government to implement 40 per cent deduction of the internally generated revenue (IGR) of federal universities and other partially funded public institutions.

UNILAG student wins start-up pitch competition

A 300-level student of the Department of Finance, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Barnabas Peter, has clinched the top spot at the start-up pitch competition of the project Innovation 2 Marketing (I2M) accelerated incubator programme.

Don seeks more investments in health for national development

A university don, Prof Akin Osibogun, has disclosed that greater investment in health would boost the sector and enhance national development.Osibogun, of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in his lecture at the 2023 Annual General Meeting and third induction ceremony of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, also lamented the failure of policymakers to implement recommendations from academic sources.

In his lecture titled: ‘Mainstreaming of health in all sectors for achieving Universal Health Coverage,’ Osibogun stated that more investments in health would bring development to the nation. Africa’s education ministers collaborate on foundational learning

Ten Africa Ministers of Education and a similar number of ministerial representatives have agreed to champion foundational learning as a priority for the 2024 African Union Year of Education (AUYoE) and beyond.

They also resolved to rally their respective Heads of State to be “champions of foundational learning.” These were part of the resolution made in Lusaka, at the end of the 2023 policy dialogue forum on foundational learning, organised by the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), and hosted by the Ministry of Education in the Republic of Zambia. VC calls for fee reduction in faith-based institutions, denies owing salaries

The Vice-Chancellor, Wesley University Ondo, Prof. Samuel Obeka, has appealed to faith-based institutions to consider fee review in respect of the present economic situation in the country.

He also denied allegations that the school owes its part-time lecturers salaries, describing the claims as mischievous. Obeka disclosed that the institution was the first to reduce its tuition fees by 50 per cent, as part of efforts to contribute to national development. Experts canvass adoption of digital tools to improve learning outcomes

Experts in the education sector have advocated the need for government to encourage teachers and students on the use of digital tools as part of efforts to improve learning outcomes.

VC canvasses support for private universities

The Vice Chancellor, Anchor University, Ayobo, Lagos, Prof. Samuel Bandele, has called on the Federal Government to support private universities, instead of focusing on public institutions alone.

Bandele, who made the plea while delivering his lecture at the 15th convocation ceremony of Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, said there should be no differential treatments between both institutions. South Africa wins World’s Best School Prize for community collaboration

Spark Soweto, an independent, partially government-funded kindergarten and primary school in Johannesburg, South Africa, has won this year’s World’s Best School Prize for Community Collaboration.Soweto has become a catalyst for change for its disadvantaged community that was once symbolic with the Apartheid struggle.

The five World’s Best School Prizes, founded last year by T4 Education in collaboration with Accenture, American Express, and the Lemann Foundation, are the world’s most prestigious education prizes and this year’s winners share an award of $250,000. Alumni donate vocational centre to alma mater

The Chairman, Baptist Academy Old Students Association (BAOSA) ’83-set, Ademola Adebise, has called on the government to grant tax waiver to individuals, who support educational development, just like it is done to corporate organisations.

Adebise, who made the appeal at the inauguration of a vocational centre and 40th graduation anniversary of the set, noted that education funding should be the collective responsibility of government and the private sector. UNIZIK suspends officer over alleged forgery

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has suspended a member of staff of the institution, Nwafor Ogbonnaya Nwesuzor, for alleged certificate forgery.

Senate begins probe of UNIABUJA students’ expulsion, summons affected persons

The two final-year students of University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Cyprian Igwe and Olamilekan Oladeru, who were expelled by the university in July over an alleged plan to protest the proposed school fees hike have been summoned by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions for hearing.

Brain drain: FG moves to stop Nigeria-sponsored scholars from absconding abroad
