Makinde appoints Salawu Poly Ibadan’s new Deputy Rector
Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde has appointed Mrs Olaide Salawu as the Deputy Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
The institution’s Registrar, Mrs Modupe Fawale, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Ibadan.

Kogi govt set to pay WAEC fees for 15,033 students
Kogi State Government, on Thursday, disclosed that 15,033 students had been captured to benefit from the payment of 2024 West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) gesture.
The Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Mr Wemi Jones, made this known on Thursday during the verification of government-sponsored 2024 WAEC candidates at Bishop Delisles College, Lokoja.

Deficit looms for UK universities as International student enrolment fall
Following announcement by UK authorities to stop international students from bringing in dependents on their study visa, there is fear that the Universities may fall into deficit as international student enrolment drops.
Vivienne Stern, Chief executive of Universities UK, which represents more than 140 universities, said the sector was facing the prospect of a “serious overcorrection” thanks to immigration policies that deterred international students from coming to study in Britain.
“If they want to cool things down, that’s one thing, but it seems to me that through a combination of rhetoric, which is off-putting, and policy changes . . .[they have] really turned a whole bunch of people off that would otherwise have come to the UK,” Stern told the Financial Times. Elizade University gets new Vice Chancellor
The management of Elizade University, Ilara mokin, Ondo state, has announced the appointment of Professor of Medicine, Kayode Thadius Ijadunola, as the forth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Institution’s Registrar, Omololu Adegbenro and signed by Head, Public Relations of Elizade, Williams Olufunmi, who said the appointment takes effect from February 1st, 2024.
The statement read: “The Board of Trustees of Elizade University, on the recommendation of the Governing Council, has approved the appointment of a Nigerian leading Professor of Medicine as the 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University. Principals, teachers warned against collection of illegal fees
Oyo State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Professor Salihu Adelabu, has described the level of compliance of teachers and students in resumption to the second term school calendar in the state as impressive.
The commissioner, while monitoring the resumption of the schools for the second term academic activities in Ibadan metropolis stated this and warned principals and teachers to desist from collecting illegal fees from students and parents

Bandits abduct Zamfara lecturer, kill nine in Katsina attack
Bandits, in the early hours of Wednesday, kidnapped a senior lecturer of the Department of Islamic Studies, Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, Mallam Bello Janbako.
Janbako, who is also the Director, Centre for Research at FUGUS, was kidnapped from his house in Damb Gusau around 1.30 am.This was as bandits, in Katsina State, on Thursday morning, killed nine people and burnt five houses in Kukar Babangida village, Jibia Local Government Area of the state.

NiMet predicts dust haze, thunderstorms nationwide
NiMet’s weather report, released on Thursday in Abuja, has forecast moderate dust haze with reduced visibility and localised thunderstorms across the country on Friday.
NiMet said that over the northern region and North-Central states, the forecast includes a horizontal visibility range of 2 – 5 km, posing potential risks for road and air travel. It emphasized the necessity for precautions in light of the suspended dust particles.
“On Friday 12th Moderate Dust Haze with a horizontal visibility range of 2 – 5 km over the Northern region and the North Central states throughout the forecast period
“Patches of clouds in the hazy atmosphere are expected in the morning hours over the inland cities of the South and the coastal states with prospects of localized thunderstorms over parts of Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states in the afternoon/evening periods,” the agency said. Foreign students: UK varsities may fall into deficit, says report
Many universities in the United Kingdom are at risk of falling into financial deficit due to the astronomical decline in international students after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s ban on bringing dependants into the country.
The PUNCH reports that the Home Office of the United Kingdom announced that it had commenced the implementation of its policy banning Nigerian students and other overseas students from bringing in dependants via the study visa route.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Home Office reiterated that only those on postgraduate research or government-sponsored scholarship students will be exempted from the development.
“We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration. From today, new overseas students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK. Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarships students will be exempt,” the Home Office said. JAMB vows not to process DE applicants with unverified certificates
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, on Friday, vowed that it would not process any Direct Entry admission without certificate verification for the Advanced Level candidates that applied for the 2023 admissions.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on the Board’s official X handle.
This development is coming after the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, on Tuesday announced the suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.
According to a statement signed by Augustina Obilor-Duru on behalf of the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, the government lamented that “some Nigerians deploy nefarious means and unconscionable methods to get a Degree with the end objective of getting graduate job opportunities for which they are not qualified”.
