Abuja private school owners reject Wike’s fee hike
An unprecedented hike in fees for Abuja-based private schools is imminent following the decision of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to hike operation charges of private schools in the capital city.
Under the new tax regime, each school will be billed according to tuition paid by students and the number of enrolments.
A memo by the Head of Account, Department of Quality Assurance of the Education Secretariat, Mudi Muhammed, which was obtained by our correspondent on Monday, said the development would take effect from January 2024.
The memo was titled: “Review of private school operation charges in FCT,” and it read: “ Following the approval of the Honourable Minister of the FCT for a review of operational charges (annual charge, accreditation, application, re-accreditation, commencement and recognition) payable by private schools in the FCT. JAMB suspends 10,378 DE students’ admission over failed verification
No fewer than 10,378 candidates, who wrote the Direct Entry examination organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in 2023, currently have their admission suspended following the failure of their A-level issuing institution to submit a verification report to JAMB.
In February 2023, JAMB issued an advisory to guide candidates seeking to gain admissions through Direct Entry in the 2023/2024 academic session.
According to JAMB, the advisory was basically to address the issue of candidates using unacceptable or forged A-level certificates/ qualifications to gain admission.
Recently, JAMB advised the candidates to contact their former institutions as soon as possible to have their certificates verified, stressing that it would not accept students with unverified certificates. 8,285 candidates sit computer-based WASSCE January 31
The Head of National Office, West African Certificate Examination, Nigeria, Dr Amos Dangut, said as of Monday, 8,285 candidates had registered for the maiden Computer Based-West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2024.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Dangut revealed that the exam would start on Wednesday, January 31, and end on Saturday, February 17, 2024, in Nigeria.
In November 2023, WAEC, in a press release, announced that it had concluded plans to conduct its WASSCE for private candidates using the computer-based model.
Dangut said that WAEC was aware that the news of this innovation was initially greeted with some level of resistance, saying, “This only served as fuel for the council to forge ahead on its course to conduct the CB-WASSCE. UNILORIN denies alleged student abduction
The management of the University of Ilorin has described last Friday’s alleged abduction of one of its students, Miss Moyosore Bright, at its main campus as a rumour.
The university, in a statement signed by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, on Monday said that its campus was safe and that none of its students was kidnapped.Akogun said, “The management of the University of Ilorin viewed with grave concern last weekend’s story about one of its students, Moyosore Bright.

Video: Unknown gunmen abduct school pupils in Ekiti
An unspecified number of schoolchildren were reportedly abducted by unknown gunmen in Emure Local Government of Ekiti State on Monday.
Though the details are still very hazy, it was learned that the abducted children were said to be students of a yet- to-be disclosed School.

UK school offers N34m scholarship for Nigerians who want to study abroad
The University of East Anglia is calling on interested Nigerians to apply for its Allan and Nesta Ferguson Scholarship worth £30,357.
According to the information on its website, the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Scholarship is worth £21,200 (N24.2 million) in tuition waiver and £9,157 (N10.4 million) to be paid as stipends.

12 varsity lecturers get N761.4m from FG to pursue PhD programmes in France
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, has awarded scholarships to 12 Nigerian lecturers from public tertiary institutions to undertake doctoral, PhD, studies on science-related disciplines in France, under the TETFund Scholarship for Academic Staff Intervention, TSAS, programme.
Speaking at a pre-departure briefing of the scholars in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc Sonny Echono, said the event flagged off the implementation of the agreement between TETFund and Campus France reached in April of 2023. 194 Jigawa Students In War-torn Sudan Move To Cyprus, India
Jigawa State Government has concluded arrangements to transfer its 194 students in war-torn Sudan to Cyprus and India for continuing their medical studies.
Speaking to the students and their parents in Dutse Government House, the state Governor Malam Umar Namadi said that since the outbreak of civil war in the Sudan Republic, the Jigawa State Government has been following the situation in the country.

Christland School: I Met Lifeless Body of My Daughter on the Hospital Bed, Mother Claims
In continuation of the negligence case filed by the Lagos State Government on March 31, 2023, against the management of Christland School, Opebi, Lagos, over the death of Whitney Adeniran, who was allegedly electrocuted at the Agege Stadium during the school’s inter-house sports on February 9, 2023, the deceased mother, Mrs. Blessing Adeniran, was at Ikeja High Court yesterday to testify on what transpired on that fateful day.
The defendants were arraigned before Justice Oyindamola Ogala.
