Kogi govt warns teachers against lateness
Kogi State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon Wemi Jones has warned teachers against arriving late to school in the state.
Jones gave the warning when he led a team from the Ministry on an unscheduled Monitoring and Supervision of Crowther Memorial College Lokoja on Tuesday.

UK-based Don to encourage reading culture, targets 1 million African students
The Director of International Exchanges and Associate Professor at the University of Bath Management School, United Kingdom, Dr. Teslim Bukoye, has commenced a project targeting one million students in higher institutions to encourage a reading culture in the system.
The project, tagged ‘ReadCycle Bath,’ aims to reach students in universities, colleges, and schools in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East with books within seven years.
He stated that the project, which began in 2022, had already supplied thousands of books to some Nigerian universities and polytechnics, including Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; University of Ilorin, Ilorin; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; and Federal University of Technology, Akure. NEMSAS to implement rural ambulance service to strengthen operations
The National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) has disclosed that plans are underway to implement and prioritise the Rural Ambulance and Maternal Transport system to cater for medical emergencies in the rural communities
The National Programme Manager of NEMSAS, Dr Saidu Ahmed Dumbulwa, while briefing the press on Monday on the NEMSAS alignment with the sector-wide approach programme of the National Health Sector Renewal Investment programme to implement Rural Ambulance and Medical transport service in rural communities in Nigeria, said, transportation barriers to healthcare are significant and have far-reaching implications regarding the health of the rural populations in Nigeria.
He added that the RESMAT will strengthen NEMSAS in the implementation of its overall vision for coordinating Emergency Medical Services(EMS) systems by extending coverage to include the last mile in rural areas. Nigeria experiencing severe learning crisis — UBEC boss
The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, has lamented that Nigeria is experiencing a severe learning crisis if not immediately addressed might hinder the nation from achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
This is even as the Federal Government has approved the extension of the use of the mother tongue or language of the immediate environment as a medium of instruction from the Early Childhood Care Education (ECCDE) to Primary 6 in the new National Language Policy.
Bobboyi spoke at a two-day stakeholders ‘Dialogue on Reading Initiative in the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Programme and the Use of Mother Tongue/Language of Immediate Environment as Medium of Instruction’, on Monday, in Abuja. Lecturers tired of FG’s unfulfilled promises—ASUU
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it is tired of the federal government’s unfaithfulness to promises made to the union.
In September 2023, the government announced an upward review of the salaries of tertiary institution workers by 35 per cent and backdated to January 2023.
It also promised to pay four months’ salaries out of the seven and half months withheld salaries during the 2022 national strike.
Some other demands of ASUU, including payment of Earned Academic Allowance, and the unprogressive renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement had at various times led to incessant strikes in the government-owned universities. Tech varsity begins 2024 admission
The Nigerian University of Technology and Management, Lagos, has begun enrollment for its full-time undergraduate degree programs in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, management, and entrepreneurship.
A statement by the institution said that with the approval of the National Universities Commission, NUTM would initially offer bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science, Cyber Security, and Information Technology.

Academy mentors six filmmakers
The Storymi Academy, a filmmaker, Ike Nnaebue, in collaboration with the French Embassy, has mentored six young Nigerian filmmakers on documentary films in France.
A statement by Nnaebue said he had been at the forefront of mentoring these six individuals at the Storymi Academy.
Other co-mentors were BBC West Africa Correspondent, Mayeni Jones, and a foremost French documentary filmmaker, Louise Monlau.

NANS laments rising inflation, economic hardship
The National Association of Nigerian Students has lamented the rising inflation and economic hardship in the country.
NANS said the state of the economy is now a threat to the “financial stability of students”.
The NANS Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, stated this on Tuesday while speaking with our correspondent in an interview.

Olugbodi challenges graduates on resilience, determination to excel
The Managing Director of Background Check International, BCI, Mr Kola Olugbodi, has urged Nigerian graduates to utilise the untapped potential for innovation within the country borders.
Olugbodi, who bemoaned the economic situation of the country said within the challenges lies an opportunity for innovation .

He said he never allowed his disability to affect him in any way as he derived a sense of satisfaction in accomplishing tasks himself ,which overshadowed his challenges.
According to him, “When life gives you lemons, make a lemonade out if it You are whatever you make out of life’s challenges.”
Olugbodi enthused that despite the disability on his leg he devised a method to drive a car as he developed a positive mindset beyond his personal limitations.
He urged the graduates to be persistent in all their pursuits despite challenges and failures in life and challenged the graduates never to accept anything in the negative but to remain dogged in life. Plateau University VC, Sacked
The Vice Chancellor of the Plateau State University, Professor Bernard Matau has been sacked from office by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau state.
Matau was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the state university while serving as the state Commissioner for Higher Education in the last administration led by former Governor Simon Lalong.
It was learnt that the vice Chancellor whose tenure is yet to elapse was removed from office alongside four other heads of tertiary institutions in the state including the Rector of the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi; Provost, College of Health Technology, Pankshin; Provost, College of Health Technology, Zawan as well as the Provost, College of Education, Gindiri.
