Strike: FUOYE Management, SSANU on war path

The Management of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, FUOYE, has debunked claims of opposing the applications of members of Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) to join Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and obstructing the deduction of the said new members dues from their salary.

It described the claims as baseless and inflammatory.

Benue SUBEB members dismiss rumour of discord with chairman, Adagba

Board members of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, have disclosed that there is no discord among board members as they are working with the Executive Chairman, Dr. Grace Adagba, to ensure that basic education is repositioned in the state.

This was disclosed to journalists on Tuesday in Makurdi by a member of the board representing ‘Zone B’, Prince Andy Uwouku.

FG to provide student hostels in 36 tertiary institutions

The Federal Government said it would provide student hostels in 36 tertiary institutions across the country.

This is even as the government has indicated its willingness to construct more hostels once these first sets are completed.

The Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sonny Echono, stated this on Tuesday when he hosted the new leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students led by its President, Lucky Emonefe, according to a statement by the Fund on Wednesday in Abuja.

Strike: SSANU, NASU, NAATS block UNILAG gate

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions, and the National Association of Academic Technologists of the University of Lagos staged a peaceful protest in front of the school’s gate on Wednesday.

They blocked vehicular movement and hindered the free flow of traffic in the environment.

They sang and displayed various placards to register their grievances with the Federal Government over their withheld salaries.

Assembly urges Oyo State Govt. to urgently improve security around public schools

The Oyo State House of Assembly has advised the executive arm of government in the state to quickly look into improving the security of schools in the state.

The legislative body said on Tuesday in Ibadan that urgent measures must be in place to beef up security around public primary and secondary schools in the state.

It called for a proactive move by government and all education stakeholders, amid the series of reports of attacks and insecurity across different parts of the country.

SSANU, NASU shut down activities in UNILAG over withheld salaries

Activities at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were on Wednesday paralysed as members of non-academic staff unions complied with the directive to embark on seven-day warning strike.

The Nation reports Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU had directed its members to embark on a warning strike over the non-payment of four months of withheld salaries.

President Bola Tinubu in October 2023 directed that the university workers that embarked on prolonged strike in 2022 should be paid four months.

Financial literacy key to secure future, CBN tells youths

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has urged youths to prioritise financial management to secure their future.

The call was made at a School Mentoring Programme held in commemoration of the Global Money Week (GMW) in Abuja.

Deputy Governor, Financial System Stability (FSS) of the CBN, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, addressed a gathering of school children, emphasising that a high income does not guarantee financial security. “What is important is your ability to develop and hone skills and attitudes to manage your financial resources to have a secure future,” he said.

Zulum Approves N1bn for Teachers’ Training

The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has approved N1 billion for the training of basic-level teachers across the 27 local government areas of the state.

Zulum announced the approval yesterday while inaugurating the newly appointed local government education secretaries who will administer the affairs of primary education in their respective local government areas.

The governor noted that over 1,000 teachers who have O’Level certificates as their highest qualification would undergo additional training to enable them to attain minimum teaching qualifications.

Jubilant Enugu Teachers Commend Gov. Mbah over Minimum Wage Payment

The Enugu State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has expressed profound gratitude to the state government for showing honest concern for the welfare of teachers in the state, including the extension of the state’s minimum wage to primary school teachers after several years of waiting.

The teachers also noted that the Governor Peter Mbah administration had in about nine months in office met four of the five-point demands the union presented to him on assumption of office.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has advised young secondary school students in the country to imbibe the culture of financial savings to better secure their future, saying young people must think about their future in making financial decisions.
The apex bank believes that the earlier children and youth learn about money management, savings and budgeting, the better they will manage their finances throughout their lives.

Deputy governor in charge of financial systems stability at the CBN, Philip Ikeazor made the call yesterday at a school mentoring programme to commemorate the 2024 Global Money Week celebrations at its Abuja headquarters. The theme for this year’s edition is “Protect your money, Secure your Future,” which stresses the importance of learning from an early age.

PTA: Alleged N15m Fraud Rocks FSTC In Ebonyi

Parents of the Federal Science Technical College (FSTC), Amuzu, in Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have raised alarm over financial impropriety perpetrated by the Executive members of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA).

This was disclosed during a press briefing in Abakaliki, during which they accused the PTA Chairman, Monday Eze, the Financial Secretary, Mrs Nwali Nkechi and the PRO, Mr Ogbonnaya James, of recklessly squandering over fifteen million naira (N15,000,000,00), belonging to the PTA.
