Nationwide Hunger: Several students feared killed in Nasarawa State University rice stampede

At least three students of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, were feared dead on Friday in a stampede when the students looted rice given for distribution by the government.

The incident occurred at the convocation square, where the bags of rice were kept awaiting Governor Abdullahi Sule’s arrival to commence distribution.

According to a witness, Moses Ajah, the surging crowd of students waiting to enter the square overpowered the security personnel and broke in through the gate, causing a stampede.

Abuja: Wike approves N280 million for 13,946 students’ scholarships

FCT minister Nyesom Wike has approved N280.3 million to pay scholarships to 13,946 indigent students at all levels of education in Abuja.

Danlami Hayyo, mandate secretary (Education Secretariat), disclosed this on Thursday in Gwagwalada during the inauguration of the accelerated rehabilitation of 19 public schools across FCT.

The inauguration took place at the School of the Gifted in Gwagwalada.

CAN Dissociates Self from Litigations against Katsina Varsities

The Katsina State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dissociated itself from litigations written by one Barrister Ibrahim Isah against the management of Federal University of Dutsin-Ma, and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University.

Isah has filed a religious intolerance suit against the management of the universities at the Federal High Court of Justice, Katsina, allegedly using Katsina CAN as an applicant.

But the state CAN Secretary, Dr. Musa Daniel, while briefing journalists in Katsina yesterday on behalf of the association, said the CAN has not engaged the service of Isah or any of his associates to institute legal action against the authorities of the universities.

FG to include Almajiris in school feeding programme

The Federal Government has said it will include the Almajiri system in the national school feeding program.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Home-Grown School Feeding, Dr. Yetunde Adeniji, disclosed this when she paid a courtesy call to the Jigawa State Governor.

She said the visit is to inform the Governor about the Federal Government’s plans to expand the national school feeding program to Almajiri schools.

Kaduna: Defence Minister Badaru confident abducted Kuriga students will be rescued soon

Abducted students of Kuriga in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State will soon be rescued, the Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, has assured.

He spoke on Thursday in Kaduna while addressing troops of 1 Division in the frontline of fighting bandits in the North-West and other parts of the country.

The Minister also assured Nigerians that the killers of military officers and soldiers in Okuama community of Delta State would be fished out to face the wrath of the law.

WAEC releases results of first CB-WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has released the results of the first-ever Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB- WASSCE) for Private Candidates, 2024–First Series.

The examination was held between Wednesday, January 31, and Saturday, February 17, 2024.

Whitney: Stadium Rented To Chrisland Lacks Emergency Facilities — Lagos Official

The cross-examination of a deputy director from the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr Yakubu Abisogun, in the trial of the Principal and some staff members of Chrisland School Opebi, over the death of Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of the school, continued on Thursday before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the State High Court, Ikeja.

While answering questions under cross-examination, from one of the defence counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olukayode Enitan, the witness testified that Agege Stadium where Chrisland School held its inter-house sports competition was owned by the Lagos State Government.

Palliative stampede: Nasarawa govt orders investigation into varsity students’ death

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has initiated a thorough investigation into the tragic incident that claimed the lives of two students from the state university and left 23 others injured on Friday.

The unfortunate incident occurred following the distribution of palliatives by the university, provided by the state government to help alleviate economic hardships faced by students.

Regrettably, some students overpowered the available security personnel, triggering a stampede that resulted in fatalities and injuries as they sought to obtain the distributed food items

Bill to increase UBEC funding to 4% passes second reading

A bill for the amendment of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Act to increase its funding from the consolidated revenue from 2 per cent to 4 per cent has passed the second reading in the House Representatives.

Chairman House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Honourable Bako Useni, made this known on Thursday during the committee oversight function at the Digital Resource Center built by UBEC in Abuja.

UBEC’s Digital Resource Centre is to provide quality digital educational content for schools across the country as well as contemporary capacity building to relevant actors in the Nigerian education sector that will lead to the delivery of high quality basic education services in Nigeria.

Three Abia Medical Students Die In Ghastly Accident

Three Abia State University Uturu Medicine and Surgery students reportedly died in a ghastly accident at the Okigwe axis of the Enugu-Umuahia Expressway. The accident happened on Thursday while six of the students were returning to Aba from the school’s medical student induction.

The driver of the vehicle the students were travelling in reportedly lost control and somersaulted.

A source who spoke to PUNCH on the auto crash said one of the students miraculously survived the accident while two are battling for their lives at an undisclosed hospital.

The source said, “Three students have been confirmed dead, while two others are injured and are battling for their lives now in the hospital while one miraculously survived.”
