CIS students shine at COBIS music festival 2024

The students of Children’s International School (CIS) Junior and Senior School,Lekki, have shined at the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), Music Festival 2024 in Bahrain.

The three-day competition designed to bring together students from all over the world to celebrate music, saw participaton from over thirty schools, with representatives from South America, Asia and Europe taking part

Kuriga School children Release Excites CSWN

The Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria (CSWN) has described the release of the 137 children of LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School, Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna state State by armed bandits as a refreshing news.

The children were abducted and herded into the forest by armed terrorists on 07 March, 2024 but eighteen (18) days after, they breathed the air of freedom to the delight of their parents and other Nigerians.

OYSHIA Improves Healthcare Access For Oyo Students, Curtails Out-Of-Pocket Expenses – Akande

The Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA), the enrollment of students in the state’s health insurance scheme has significantly reduced out-of-pocket expenses among them, thereby enhancing their access to immediate healthcare. Students who become ill can now easily visit their institution’s clinic or sick bay for treatment.

Disclosing this was Dr. Olusola Akande, Executive Secretary of OYSHIA, who noted that the premium for the health insurance scheme goes as low as N13,500 per annum for each person in the State, adding that the informal sector is also accommodated and allowed to pay every month.

FG Denies Paying Ransom To Free 137 Kaduna Schoolchildren

The Federal Government has insisted that it did not pay ransom to secure the release of the 137 schoolchildren kidnapped from Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the remarks on Monday, shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said the Federal Government policy of non-payment of ransom to free abductees was still in effect, noting that similar thing played out in the case of the Kuriga schoolchildren.

Six Kaduna schoolchildren hospitalised after freedom

Six pupils of Kuriga School freed from kidnappers’ den are receiving treatment in Kaduna, the military said yesterday. One hundred and thirty-one of their mates were handed over to the state government.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) First Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Mayirenso Saraso handed the children over to Governor Uba Sani on behalf of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).

He said the military used kinetic and not-kinetic methods in securing their release from the kidnappers in Zamfara State where they were taken.

Fed Govt plans census of schools

The Federal Government yesterday said it is planning to carry out a census of all schools in the country. The government said the data from the census would enable it to tackle the challenges facing the sector.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced this at a two-day capacity-building workshop for desk officers in the ministry, its departments, and agencies (MDAs) yesterday in Abuja.

He said: “It is our plan that by the end of this year or early next year, we will be signing a partnership contract with a firm that will be working with our IT people to generate data on all schools in Nigeria.

Alumni of Baptist High School, Orerokpe, in Bold Reunion

Globally, and from time immemorial, ideas that give rise to great things often do not ring loud bells. Indeed, some might appear like a joke between friends rather than surfacing in dramatic fashion. So began the decision by the 1972 to 1980 set of alumni of the Baptist High School, Orerokpe, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, to come together for a few days to brainstorm and reminisce on their good old days in college. Once the idea crystalized and gained traction, with many alumni belonging to the period, the choice of the serene Orerokpe town was a forgone conclusion.

The old boys and girls of the school began trickling into the immaculately clean Orerokpe town on Friday March 22. As some of the truly excited old students told THISDAY later, coming back, albeit a brief visit, to the very place and school they graduated over four decades ago was a lifetime experience worth the effort. Gradually, all their initial skepticism vaporized as recognizing the face of an old classmate, a co-member of the school football team, athletic club or school choir, triggered an eruption of excitement with laughter, backslapping and friendly jabs and school-kid “yabbings”.

Falana demands prosecution of culprits in Nasarawa varsity students’ death

HUMAN rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, on Sunday called for legal consequences over the death of two Nasarawa State University students during palliative distribution stampede.

The senior advocate also knocked the vice chancellor of the institution for criminalising the participation of students in the rice-sharing exercise.

(ASCAB) said, “Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State was reported to have ordered the distribution of two 7.5 kilogramme bags of rice and N5,000 to each stu- dent of the university in Keffi.

Agriculture must be taught as a business, not basic science —Prof. Omole

Overseer, Bora Agro Nigeria Limited of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Moor Plantation, Ibadan, an arm of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Professor Adeboye Omole, has posited that agriculture must be taught in schools as a business and not basic science.

Professor Omole stated this while addressing students of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), who were on an excursion visit to IAR&T recently.

He stated that agriculture has become more of a business, hence the need for it to be taught in schools as a business and not as basic science.

Kebbi govt to transform Shari’a, integrate Almajiri system into education department

The Kebbi state government has disclosed readiness to transform the Shari’a system, and the Almajiri system of education into an established education department in the state.

The Hon. Commissioner for Religious Matters, Arc. Muhammad Sani Aliyu, disclosed this during a press conference organized by the State Ministry of Information and Culture.

Aliyu stated that his Ministry intends to educate the public on the meaning and wisdom of Shari’a to ensure peaceful coexistence in the society. He added that the Almajiri integration would regulate conduct of Almajiri training, streamline the concept of its education and improve the system.

91 bag first class as Ekiti varsity honours Adeboye, Adelusi-Adeluyi, others

Ninety-one graduating students of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti bagged first-class degrees while 3,262 others got second-class upper division.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Olanipekun, said that 6,411 got second class lower division while 747 got third class and the remaining four of the 10,515 degree graduands had pass.

Olanipekun disclosed this on Monday at a press conference heralding the 28th convocation of the institution.

He said a total of 10,894 graduates, comprising 224 diplomas and 155 from post-graduate college, would graduate on the occasion.
