Value Re-Orientation: NOA to Establish Citizens’ Brigade in Schools

As part of efforts to address the problems affecting Nigerian children and youths, the federal government has mulled an initiative that would promote good value system in schools across the country.

The government also said it was the process of developing a national policy on parenting to help address various societal malaise including insecurity, broken marriages, lack of adherence to our national values and ethics.

Speaking yesterday, at the multi-stakeholders’ workshop on parenting programmes in Nigeria supported by Parenting For Life Long Health and Global Parenting Initiative, University of Oxford held in Abuja, the Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-onilu, said the agency was in the process of establishing Citizens Brigades in Secondary and Primary schools.

Tinubu Approves Dualisation of Ado-Ekiti-Ikere-Akoko Road After Students’ Protest

Barely a day after hundreds of students and staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, staged a protest to show anger on the deplorable state of the Ado-Ekiti-Ondo/Abuja road network, the federal government has approved commencement of its dualisation.

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, made the disclosure yesterday in Ado-Ekiti via a statement. According to him, the federal government had approved the dualisation of the said road network which is about 31 kilometer long.

He said the construction work on the road project would commence soon.

Otti Initiates Total Remodelling of Schools in Abia

Governor Alex Otti’s initiative to remodel primary and secondary schools in Abia would transform the education sector, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube Chukwu, said.

Chukwu disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Umuahia, saying that the initiative announced last week after the meeting of the State Executive Council would help revolutionise the entire Abia education sector.

He described the move as strategic, given that education is indispensable in the quest to build a modern and better Abia. The SSA applauded Otti for the well-thought-out policy initiative, noting that a well-functioning education system will significantly impact Abia’s economic growth and overall development.

Traditionalists want traditional religious knowledge as subject in schools

Traditional Religion Worshippers’ Association, on Wednesday, urged both the Federal and State Governments to establish schools where traditional religious knowledge would be taught as a subject to impart the younger generation with the Yoruba culture and tradition.

The Secretary of the Oyo State branch of the association, Fayemi Fakayode, who made this call in Ibadan, the state capital, further urged the governments to include traditional religious knowledge as a subject in the primary and secondary school curricula like Islamic Religious Knowledge and Christian Religious Knowledge.

Lagos demolishes shanties around schools, drainage

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have cleared illegal structures built around the fence of Salvation Army Primary School, Ayobo, Ipaja area of the state.

This is as some residents alleged that local government officials were responsible for the illegal structures springing up around school perimeter fences and on drainage alignments in the state.

In a video shared on X by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, some owners of the structures were seen hurriedly salvaging their goods while the demolition was ongoing.

Students Lament As Accommodation Costs Soar In Tertiary Institutions

Students of tertiary institutions in Niger State have cried out over rising cost of accommodation, off campus in particular and pleaded for the intervention of the state government.

The students who said they are particularly worried that most of the federal and state government owned tertiary institutions do not have enough space to accommodate students admitted on an annual basis, lamented what they go through in the hands of landlords and estate agents to get decent accommodation outside the campuses.

World Oral Health Day: Pepsodent Deepens Oral Health Awareness, Holds Activation In 16 Schools

Pepsodent, as part of efforts to deepen awareness of oral health care, recently embarked on activation in 16 primary schools in Lagos.

The activation exercise, which held simultaneously in all the schools across four locations, namely Makoko, Yaba, Surulere, and Ikeja, is part of activities lined up to commemorate the 2024 World Oral Health Day.

Some of the schools that were visited in Lagos include Makoko Primary School, Adekunle Anglican Primary School, Aiyetoro African Church Primary School, Blooming Greens Primary School, Myhoung Military Primary School, Hussey Military Primary School, Morocco Military Primary School, Military Primary School, Army Children Primary School, Ann’s Barracks School, Adebola Baptist Primary School, Estate Baptist Primary School, Baptist Primary School, Akin Jacobs Memorial Baptist Primary School; Dansol Primary School and Role Model School.

Al-Muhhibah Open University Appoints Prof. Ahmed Garba Acting VC

The Governing Council of Al-Muhhibah Open University, Abuja has approved the appointment of Prof Ahmad Salisu Garba as Aacting Vice-Chancellor.

Garba’s appointment is contained in a letter dated March 25, 2023, by Barr. Muslim Migari, the Registrar of the university.

Maigari said the appointment follows the demise of professor Muhtar Hanif Alhassan, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the university, who died in Egypt after a protracted illness.

Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund isn’t recruiting. Beware of scammers claiming otherwise.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is responsible for funding Nigeria’s public higher education institutions. The agency was established in 2011 by the country’s federal government to manage education tax funds for governmental tertiary education institutions.

Ads for jobs at the agency would attract many looking for work. TETFund has six offices across the country. A post shared to a Facebook group with over 230,000 members in January 2024 claims that TETFund is recruiting.

Kogi lawmaker awards scholarship to 34 KSCOE students

The Member Representing Ankpa1 State Constituency at the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon Lawal Akus has awarded scholarship to 34 students of the Kogi State College of Education (KSCOE), Ankpa.

Hon. Akus announced the award at the matriculation ceremony of the College, on Tuesday. He said the gesture i is part of his efforts at ensuring education for constituents, especially the children from the less privileged homes.

The lawmaker, who described education as an everlasting gift to humanity, presented a cheque of five hundred thousand naira (500,000) as initial deposit of four million naira (4,000,000) for the sponsorship for the thirty four Ankpa1 students in the College.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Business School (UBS) has commenced Post-Graduate and Certificate courses for effective leadership and management in business, economy and governance.

Director of the school, Prof. Chinedu Onyeizugbe, who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen to mark the commencement of the new admission season, said the move was part of the University’s commitment to making education accessible to all.

Onyeizugbe said that the idea behind the programmes is to ensure that Nigerians both in the business and career areas find opportunity to develop their capabilities and garner certifications based on their acquired knowledge.

We’ve paid N1.2b gratuities to councils, primary school retirees’

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji said yesterday that his administration had paid N1.2billion gratuity to retired local government workers and primary school teachers. He spoke in Ado-Ekiti while disbursing N250million gratuity cheques to 114 retired local government workers and primary school teachers.

Oyebanji said he shared the pains of the retirees waiting for too long before being handed their gratuity, assuring them that with increase in the monthly payment of gratuity from N50million to N100million, many pensioners would soon be captured.

DSUST partners oil firm on practical engineering training for students

Delta State University of Science and Technology (DESUST), Ozoro, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MG VOWGAS Limited, an indigenous oil and gas servicing company, for the practical engineering training of students of the university.

At the signing ceremony at the company’s office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, the vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Jacob Oboreh, said the partnership marks a turning point in the university’s quest to produce world-class engineering and technologically savvy graduates.

Professor Oboreh thanked the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Godwin Izomor and the General Manager of the company for Government and External Relations, Mr. Anthony Ogilo, for their interest in partnering with the university to develop young professionals in the oil and gas, as well as engineering industry.

‘We will expedite action on bill establishing Maritime varsity —House Committee on Education

The House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration has promised to expedite action to ensure the bill establishing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) is passed into law.

Leader of the committee, Honourable Uduak Odudoh, stated this recently during oversight functions of the committee to the NMU, Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Addressing newsmen shortly after assessing the university facilities in the twin communities of Okerenkoko and Kurutie, Odudoh said once the bill is passed, the institution will kick-start as soon as possible.
