Ekiti Targets Zero Percent Out-of-School Children, Says Gov Oyebanji
Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has restated the commitment of his administration to ensure that every child in the state has access to quality and compulsory education, noting that education remains a weapon in ensuring that social, political, and economic growth of any society.
Governor Oyebanji made this known at the 28th convocation ceremony of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, just as the newly inducted Chancellor of the university, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, announced a N1 billion agribusiness empowerment fund for products of the institution as a way to boost agriculture and food security.
Global Space and Astronomy Agencies Visit Premiere Academy to Spur Students’ Interest in Space Science
The United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration Agency (NASA), in conjunction with a Nigerian NGO, Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) Nigeria, has commenced an educational initiative in the country to boost awareness about Astronomy and Space Science among Nigerian students.
Under the Initiative, a team of NASA ambassadors visited the country recently on an exchange program aimed at exposing students to NASA missions as a way of encouraging them to show interest in Space Science and the Space Sector, in their pursuit of career path.
Thomas Adewumi University Signs MoU with US Varsity in Maryland
History has been made as Bowie State University in Maryland (BSU), United States, and Thomas Adewumi University, Oko, Kwara State (TAU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The management of the university said this “huge feet is the first step in the landmark collaboration between Bowie State University, Bowie, Maryland, USA and Thomas Adewumi University, Oko Kwara State, Nigeria, in creating a global community for the students and faculties of both institutions.
Lawmaker Assures Adequate Funding of Student Loan
Chairman of the House Committee on Student’s Loans, Hon. Gboyega Isiaka, has assured Nigerians of the present administration’s resolve towards ensuring adequate funding of the loans for the benefits of Nigerians studying in public-owned tertiary institutions across the country.
Isiaka, while briefing the press in Abuja, disclosed that the quantum of funds required for successful implementation of the loans woulld be drawn from one per cent of all revenues accruing into the Federation Account.
He explained that the repeal of the initial Student Loan Act was necessitated with a view to removing all the encumbrances that could deprive a lot of Nigerian Students from accessing the Loan.
Minister: We’re Working on Payment of Allowances Owed Nigerian Scholars Abroad
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman has pledged the readiness of the federal government to offset the 10-month outstanding allowances to Nigerian scholars abroad, amidst the mounting pressure from parents and complaints that the default in payment is taking a toll on the studies of the Nigerian scholars in foreign lands.
The students are owed 10 months allowance and there are reports that the situation is having serious consequences on their programmes.
Responding to a THISDAY enquiry on the plight of the students and the complaints by their parents, the Minister disclosed that the government is putting the finishing touches to the payment arrangement, which he said was delayed by the current instability in the foreign exchange rates in Nigeria.
KSU Chancellor, Olowolafe, Launches N1bn Innovation Fund for Undergraduates
The Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Dr Tunji Olowolafe, has announced a N1 billion innovation fund designed to empower agro-tech companies founded by present graduates and students of the institution.
Olowolafe announced this at the 28th convocation ceremony of EKSU held 3rd and 4th of April 2024 while also thanking the visitor of the university and Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, for finding him worthy to be appointed as Chancellor.
He said: “The 1 billion naira Innovation Fund is designed to empower agro-tech companies founded by present graduates and students of our great Ekiti State University.
BUA Commences Construction of N250m Administrative Block in Al-Qalam Varsity
The AbdulSamad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) has commenced the construction of a N250 million administrative block and a conference room for the Al-Qalam University in Katsina State. The project, an initiative of the Chairman of BUA Group, AbdulSamad Rabiu, is part of his 2022 Tertiary Education Grant Scheme (TEGS), which covers 22 tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Speaking during the ceremonial ground-breaking of the project Thursday, the Managing Director of ASR Africa, Dr. Ubon Udoh, said education is a priority area of intervention for ASR Africa and its chairman.
He said the chairman of ASR Africa was committing $100 million every year to support health, education and social development sectors in Nigeria and Africa at large.
Edo Community Grieves over Missing 200-level Undergraduate
The inhabitants of Iru Egbede community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State have expressed grief over the sudden disappearance of their daughter, Faith Omodon, a 200-level undergraduate of Delta State University (DELSU).
Investigation revealed that Miss Omodon was last seen on March 30, 2024, after leaving home for farm.
Narrating the incident, father of the girl, Mr. Edward Omodon, said: “The whole incident happened when we were holding our national conference.

Edo Community Seeks Help Over Missing Delta Varsity Undergraduate
The Iru Egbede community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State has cried out over the disappearance of a 200-level undergraduate of Delta State University (DELSU), Faith Omodon.
Faith, a student of Business Administration, was last seen on Saturday after she left her home for the farm.
Faith’s father, Edward Omodon, said the news of his missing daughter reached him while he was at a community gathering
Bishop Anagbe offers scholarship to 165 Benue orphans
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, has offered scholarships to one hundred and sixty-five children whose parents were killed by the marauding herdsmen to study in all Catholic Schools across the Diocese.
Bishop Anagbe, who made the disclosure during the celebration of his birthday at the Ortese Internally Displaced Persons camp (IDPs) in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, explained that he decided to celebrate his birthday with the displaced persons because he is one of them.
Kano CAS IJMB Graduates Donate Cash To Children Of Deceased Classmates
Members of the College of Arts and Remedial Studies (CAS), Kano, IJMB Class 2002, on Friday, donated N1,631,000 to 31 orphans of 14 of their deceased classmates.
The money was disbursed to the beneficiaries at a ceremony held at the premises of the college in Kano amid tears from both the beneficiaries and the donors themselves.
The Association said the gesture was aimed at assisting the orphans in this Holy month of Ramadan and for the forthcoming Sallah festival.

EKSU Chancellor launches N1b Innovation Fund
The Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, has announced a N1 billion Innovation Fund, designed to empower agro-tech companies founded by the current graduands and students of the institution.
He also announced the establishment of a new programme designed to offer support and subsidies for up to 30 academic staff-members, which he said is aimed at facilitating their participation in international conferences, training sessions and research activities.

ADP governorship aspirant promises free education, healthcare
An Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship aspirant in Ondo State, Mr Ayodeji Akinnodi, has promised free healthcare and education for children in the state.
Akinnodi said this yesterday in Abuja during the presentation of expression of interest and nomination forms by the party’s National Chairman, Mr Yabagi Sani.
He also promised a 90 per cent power supply and expansion of major roads to aid commercial activities and productivity in the state. He said: “I will reform the healthcare and educational system and bring back free education in my state.
No casualty in fire, says LASUTH
The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has confirmed an outbreak of fire at the Information and Communications Technology Unit of the hospital, saying investigations are underway to determine the cause.
The management of LASUTH made the disclosure in a statement issued by Ms Oluwaseyi Adewale, Head, Public Affairs Department, LASUTH, yesterday.
The management said that there were no casualties and the fire had been extinguished with investigation ongoing to assess the extent of damage to the hospital infrastructure.

With education loan scheme, future of Nigerian child will be brighter — Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu says the future of the Nigerian child will be brighter as the path to take them out of poverty has been cleared with the Students’ Loans Re-enactment Bill.
The President said this when he hosted members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, and the Independent Campaign Council, ICC, to Iftar on Wednesday in Abuja.
