Oromoni: Coroner Inquest Clears Dowen College of Wrongdoing, Upbraids Parents

The Coroner Inquest set up to unravel the death of a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Sylvester Junior Oromoni, who died under controversial circumstances,yesterday, exonerated the school and the five students accused of bullying, and forcing the deceased to drink substance which caused his death

The coroner, Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, who stopped at intervals to weep about the death of Oromoni, said the deceased’s death was an avoidable death but for the negligence of his parents and the family doctor Aghogho Owhojede, who didn’t take him to the hospital until the day he died on November 30, 2021.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended President Bola Tinubu for recently signing the Student Loan Bill into law.

Many schools still can’t prevent mass abduction, 10 years

Disturbingly, over the past decade, conflict-related violence has resulted in the abduction of more than 1,680 children from schools, with 180 children killed in attacks on schools. The threat of abduction has instilled fear in over one million children, leading to school closures and disrupting learning.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that a significant portion (37 percent) of schools in Nigeria still lack essential measures to prevent attacks, 10-year after the tragic Chibok abductions in Borno State.

UNICEF urges Nigeria to secure schools, children’s future

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged the Nigerian government to secure children’s education by ensuring that 37 percent of schools across 10 states have early warning systems in place to identify threats such as school attacks.

Their call comes as a report shows that over 1,680 school children have been abducted in Nigeria in the last ten years.

Suspended UNICAL professor asks court to quash charge against him

Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Calabar (UNICAL), has prayed a Federal High Court, Abuja to quash the sexual harassment charge against him.

Ndifon, who told Justice James Omotosho in a further affidavit filed by his lawyer, Joe Agi, SAN, insisted that Osuobeni Akponimisingha, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)’s counsel handling the case, was not qualified to practise as lawyer.

UNIJOS dental students protest delayed accreditation, lecturer shortage

Students from the Faculty of Dental Science at the University of Jos took to the streets on Monday, protesting the delayed accreditation of their programmes by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.The root cause, according to the students, was the shortage of lecturers in the faculty.

Bearing placards with messages like “Unijos is careless over students’ future,” “We deserve better, merge Unijos Dental students,” and “Depression wan kill us, save us please,” the students stormed the university’s permanent site at the Naraguta campus.

UNILAG, UNN, four others to receive €1.8 million grant from EU

The University of Lagos, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Port-Harcourt, Ebonyi State University, and two other Nigerian Universities will each receive €1.8 million from the European Union.

This funding, through the EU-funded Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme, is to be allocated for projects focusing on the development of high-level green and digital skills.
