In line with the vision of the late Malcolm X, who famously asserted that “Education is the passport to the future,” a community leader in Mgbowo, Enugu State, has initiated a transformative educational project. Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare, a prominent software firm, recently shared insights into this endeavor on his social media platform. Originating in 2023, the project aimed to address the prevalent issue of mass failure in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) among the youth in the region.

Expressing concern over the dismal performance of local students in the previous UTME, where over 70 percent faced failure, Onyia and his team resolved to take proactive measures. Implementing intensive preparatory programs, including morning and evening drilling sessions and monthly Computer-Based Tests (CBTs), they sought to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for success.

One significant challenge identified during the course of the project was the students’ lack of familiarity with computers, hindering their performance in the computer-based UTME. To address this, Onyia’s team provided training and support, ensuring that every student could confidently navigate the exam interface.

The results of their efforts have been remarkable, with Onyia proudly announcing that none of the students scored below 200 in the recent UTME. Many achieved scores exceeding 250, and some even surpassed the coveted 300 mark. Looking ahead, Onyia plans to leverage this success by establishing a mentorship program, wherein successful students will impart their knowledge and strategies to the next generation of learners. The initiative has garnered widespread praise, with individuals commending Onyia and his team for their dedication to empowering youth through education.
