Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, has addressed speculation surrounding its scheduled Senate meeting, emphasizing that it is not intended for the election of an Acting Vice Chancellor. Amidst a power tussle over the forthcoming vacancy in the position of Vice Chancellor due to the retirement of Prof Charles Esimone in June, controversy has arisen within the university community.

Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor (Public Relations & Special Duties), issued a press release to dispel rumors circulating on social media regarding the purpose of the Senate meeting. Ojukwu clarified that allegations suggesting the outgoing VC was convening the Senate solely to elect his successor were unfounded and misleading.

Highlighting the process for appointing an Acting Vice Chancellor in the absence of a Governing Council, Ojukwu reaffirmed that such appointments are made by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education. He stressed that the agenda for Senate meetings is communicated to senators in advance and refuted claims of clandestine agendas or ulterior motives behind administrative meetings led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu.
