Education experts have emphasized the importance of a multi-faceted approach involving collaboration between schools, teachers, parents, and students in combating bullying in schools, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Mr. Sunday Fowowe, National President of the Association of Nursery and Primary Education Instructors in Nigeria (ANPEIN), stressed that prevention of bullying is essential for improving students’ performance. Fowowe, who is also a lecturer at the Department of Early Childhood Care and Primary Education Studies, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), called for comprehensive anti-bullying policies and programs in schools aimed at promoting empathy, respect, and understanding.
“These include fostering open communication channels, educating students about the impacts of bullying, and providing support systems for both victims and perpetrators,” Fowowe said.
He emphasized the need for schools to enforce strict disciplinary actions against bullying behavior while also offering counseling and rehabilitation opportunities for offenders to learn from their actions. Additionally, promoting a culture of inclusivity and celebrating diversity can help create a safer and more supportive environment for all students.
Mr. Olaniyi Jemisoye, Vice Principal for Academics at Grimes International College, Suberu Oje, Alagbado, Lagos, described bullying as a serious matter that is becoming unbearable among students in schools. Jemisoye highlighted the importance of daily awareness efforts at the assembly ground and collaborative efforts between school management and parents in tackling the issue.
Prof. Babajide Abidogun, National President of the Early Childhood Association of Nigeria (ECAN), reiterated the need for stakeholders to stand against bullying. He emphasized the role of teachers, school administrators, and parents in monitoring and guiding children, even during break periods. Abidogun also called for a reconsideration of government policies regarding discipline in schools, emphasizing the importance of eradicating bullying from educational institutions.
In conclusion, educationists stressed the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in combating bullying, emphasizing the need for a proactive and collaborative approach to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
