Education Commissioner Ndubueze Mbah announced on Tuesday in Enugu that a pilot study for the smart green school initiative has been conducted in Owo, Nkanu East LGA, enrolling 840 pupils and junior secondary students. This pilot school will serve as a model to be replicated across all 260 wards in the 17 local government areas (LGAs).

According to Mbah, the smart green school project is a long-term investment, projected to last 100 years with a budget of N1 billion per school. Each school will feature 25 inclusive classrooms, internet access, a solar power system, medical facilities, and housing for 40 teachers and staff.

Mbah emphasized that understanding food production and changing perceptions about agriculture are essential goals of the initiative.

The project, supported by UNICEF and other donor agencies, aims to transform education in Enugu State with the integration of artificial intelligence and mechatronics. By September 2025, 135 smart schools are expected to be operational.

Additionally, the state government is establishing a training center at the Enugu College of Education, Technical, to develop smart teachers for both local and international needs. This center will include a creativity hub for coding and robotics, as well as a mechatronics hub for learning both traditional and emerging technologies. These features are already in place at the pilot Enugu Smart School in Owoh.
