LAGOS, NIGERIA – In response to directives from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), public schools and the Lagos State University (LASU) observed a shutdown on Monday. Primary school students were turned back upon arrival at their various schools, marking a significant compliance with the union’s instructions.

A LASU staff member, who requested anonymity, confirmed the university’s adherence to the directive, noting that only a few workers were present on campus. “With the look of things, I may soon go home since nothing is going on on campus. Few workers are around and skeleton work is happening,” the staff member stated.

Primary schools in Abesan Estate, located in the Alimosho Local Government Area, were also closed. Similarly, in Ojo Local Government Area, public schools were shut down, and pupils were turned back at the entrance gates.

This pattern of closure was observed across several other locations in the state, including Oshodi/Isolo, Ikeja, Agege, and more. By 9 AM, many schoolchildren were seen returning home after their teachers failed to show up, and the entrances to the school premises remained shut.

The shutdown is part of broader actions by the NLC and TUC, which are aimed at pressing their demands on various issues affecting workers and the educational sector in Nigeria. The widespread compliance highlights the unions’ influence and the seriousness of the grievances being addressed.
