In a significant stride towards economic empowerment, over 3,700 youths from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have been equipped with valuable trade and entrepreneurship skills by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). This initiative, part of the Federal Government’s National Economic Growth and Recovery Programme (NEGRP), aims to provide hands-on training in various trades, including carpentry, catering, tiling, welding and fabrication, and electrical installation and maintenance.

Organised in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the two-month programme was held simultaneously across the states and the FCT, training 100 candidates in each state. The goal is to equip Nigeria’s youths with essential skills to boost the nation’s economy and foster self-reliance.

At the graduation ceremony for the recent participants in Lagos, Dr. Afiz Ogun, the Director General of ITF, represented by Mr. James Fanope, Training Manager of the Industrial Skills Training Centre in Ikeja, expressed his satisfaction with the high quality of training received by the participants. He highlighted that the new skills acquired would significantly help them excel in their chosen vocations.

A hundred youths in Lagos benefited from the scheme, receiving both certificates and National Occupational Standard Certificates regulated by the National Board of Technical Education and Business. Additionally, they were provided with starter packs to help them launch their entrepreneurial ventures.

Ogun emphasized the practical nature of the training, noting that it was conducted by experts in various trades to ensure that the participants gained hands-on experience. He stated, “The Federal Government is committed to fostering entrepreneurial skills and supporting economic growth through various intervention programmes, including NEGRP.”

The DG congratulated the participants and urged them to effectively apply the knowledge they gained to make a positive impact in their communities. He also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to driving national development and economic resilience through such initiatives.

Several participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to acquire valuable skills. Ms. Khadijat Adetutu, a catering trainee, mentioned that the program exceeded her expectations. Similarly, Adetoun Babayanju praised the organisers for providing them with the chance to learn, become self-sufficient, and contribute to the national economy.

The ITF’s initiative represents a significant step in addressing unemployment and underemployment among Nigerian youths. By equipping them with practical skills, the programme aims to create a generation of skilled entrepreneurs who can contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.
