Students of the University of Benin took to the streets amidst rainfall Tuesday, blocking the busy Benin-Ore Highway to protest weeks of power outages on campus.
The blackout resulted from a dispute between the university management and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over a significant increase in the monthly electricity bill from N80 million to N280 million.
Due to the disagreement, the university has been relying on generators and rationing power across its two campuses, severely affecting students’ preparation for their first semester exams scheduled in the next two weeks
