At the second Diran Fawibe Annual Lecture at the University of Ibadan, Professor Omowumi Iledare from LSU Centre for Energy Studies emphasized that the Nigerian government must spearhead the transition to renewable energy by setting clear agendas, formulating policies, and cooperating with regional allies.

He highlighted the global shift towards green energy and Nigeria’s net-zero carbon target for 2060.

Iledare stressed the need for a balanced transition framework that ensures energy security, equity, and sustainability. He called for empowering energy institutions to attract investments through entrepreneurship and innovation while reducing inefficiency. He advocated for public-private partnerships and leveraging Nigeria’s comparative advantages in energy resources, underscoring the importance of the new Africa Energy Bank.

Transformational leadership in the energy sector, Iledare noted, is crucial for driving a robust energy mix essential for Nigeria’s prosperity. He also highlighted the significance of technical education for sustainable development.

Mutiu Sunmonu, chairman of Julius Berger, echoed the importance of understanding energy transition, emphasizing the need for accessible and affordable energy solutions for Nigerians. The lecture aimed to foster collaboration between universities and industries to support Nigeria’s growth and development.
