The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) has suspended its five-day warning strike over unpaid salaries. Dr. Ashiru Mikail, Vice-President of the association, announced that the strike was called off on Monday evening, and resident doctors resumed work at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Dr. Mikail explained that the suspension followed a marathon meeting between the association and ABUTH management. “There was a serious commitment from the part of the management to address the demands of the association; the management had pledged to stop percentage salary payments to our members,” he said.

He added that the meeting also produced robust initiatives to prevent further industrial disharmony between the association and ABUTH management.

NARD had initiated the strike on July 22 to protest the percentage salary payments for members on the GIFMIS platform and the nonpayment of accoutrement allowance, among other issues. The resolution and management’s commitments mark a significant step toward addressing these grievances and fostering better relations between the doctors and the hospital administration.
