Former Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili has accused the current administration of using security forces to intimidate and harass Nigerians amidst severe economic challenges.

Her remarks follow recent actions by the Department of State Services (DSS), including the arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Comrade Joe Ajaero and a raid on the office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Abuja.

In a statement posted on her X handle, Ezekwesili condemned the government’s approach, calling it a “draconian assault on rights” that exacerbates the economic hardship faced by citizens. She criticized the administration for creating unnecessary tension and outlined three actions President Bola Tinubu should take to de-escalate the situation: ensuring security agencies adhere to constitutional laws, releasing all detained protesters, and initiating a Citizens-led National Conversation and Constitutional process.

Ezekwesili urged the government to halt its current course and address the pressing issues facing the country, asserting that Nigerians will not tolerate authoritarian practices.
