Terhile Timothy Achinya, a mechanical engineering student at Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic I Lafia, was allegedly beaten to death by unidentified military personnel.
The incident, which has incited outrage within the Polytechnic community, occurred after military men detained Achinya and other students following a tip-off about suspected cult activities. Achinya reportedly died during interrogation and was later taken to Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia.
The Acting Rector of the institution, Dr. Nurudeen Mu’azu Maifata, has urged calm amid the unrest. The Students Union Government (SUG) President, Comr. Jacob John Mutuwa, criticized the lack of student accommodation provided by the institution, which he believes could have prevented the tragedy. Legal action has been initiated against those responsible, and the SUG has called for justice.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded immediate action from military authorities and urged government and individuals to support the pursuit of justice for Achinya. NANS alleges that soldiers from the 123 Special Force Battalion are responsible for the killing and calls for swift disciplinary measures.
