The Nigerian Union of Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory has resumed industrial action, effective September 18, due to unresolved welfare concerns.

This decision follows a State Wing Executive Council meeting and comes after a 14-day ultimatum for area councils to settle teachers’ entitlements expired on September 17. All public primary schools in the FCT are closed as the union urges parents to remain informed until their demands are addressed.

Key issues driving the strike include the non-payment of 60% of the 25-month-old minimum wage, unpaid salary increases, and unfulfilled agreements regarding peculiar allowances and wage award arrears. Although FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has committed to paying 40% of the minimum wage arrears, the union expresses frustration over the area councils’ failure to meet their obligations.

In response, Hassan Sule, acting chairman of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board, has called for the strike to be suspended, stating that discussions with area council chairpersons are ongoing to resolve the disputes.
