The Lagos State government is urging parents to prioritize the treatment, health, and education of children with special needs.

During the inaugural conference organized by Treasured Kids Foundation (TKF), themed “Raising a Community of Change with One,” Dr. Olufunmilayo Bankole, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District 1, emphasized the importance of government support for families of special needs children. The conference aimed to raise awareness about congenital and genetic disabilities affecting African children aged 0 to 12, highlighting that while these conditions are not common, their impact can be significant and long-lasting.

Bankole stressed the necessity for parents to be empowered with knowledge regarding appropriate nutrition, treatment, and educational opportunities for their children. She pointed out that Lagos State has dedicated agencies, such as LASODA, and health initiatives like the Ilera Eko Health Insurance program, which provide essential resources for families of children with disabilities.

Mrs. Oluronke Kalejaiye, founder of TKF, shared her personal journey as a parent of a child with a rare neuromuscular disease, advocating for awareness and support for individuals with special needs. The event brought together community leaders, healthcare workers, and representatives from various sectors to foster a collaborative effort in eradicating stigma and ensuring inclusive care for children with congenital abnormalities.
