The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has certified 2.4 million teachers as professional educators, according to its database. Ugo-Ali Lawrence, Director of Planning,

Research, and Statistics at TRCN, disclosed this during the 2024 Teachers’ Day commemoration in Abuja, organized by the Association of Model Islamic Schools (AMIS-Nigeria) and Quality Education Development Associates (QEDA). He emphasized that without a teaching license from the council, individuals are not recognized as qualified teachers.

Lawrence noted that many educators in private schools, particularly in Abuja, miss out on significant opportunities, including legal support for improved salaries and global recognition, due to not taking the qualifying exams. He also highlighted the council’s ongoing initiatives to enhance teacher development, including its journal for Nigerian teachers, which has reached its seventh edition.

At the event, the Niger State Government honored Comrade Labaran Garba, the former Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Niger State wing, for his contributions to the teaching profession. The state praised Garba’s leadership and commitment to advancing education during his tenure.

Niger State Governor Alhaji Mohammed Bago, represented by Majority Leader Alhaji Musa Vatsa, pledged the state’s commitment to resolving teachers’ challenges by allocating half of next year’s budget to the education sector. He assured educators that the government is taking significant steps to improve the sector and provide better support for teachers.
