The Ogun State Government has suspended a teacher from Obada Grammar School, Idi-emi, following the reported death of Monday Ariyo, a Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2) student.

The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology confirmed the suspension after allegations surfaced that the teacher had flogged Ariyo and subjected him to 162 frog jumps. Ariyo later collapsed and was taken to the Federal Medical Center in Abeokuta, where he passed away.

According to reports, the incident began when the teacher allegedly brought a trash can into the classroom, instructing students not to break it. Ariyo reportedly remarked that the dustbin had been purchased with students’ funds, prompting the teacher’s response, which included corporal punishment. The State Government announced via its X (formerly Twitter) handle that the teacher has since been detained, while the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, faces a disciplinary query for permitting corporal punishment, a practice prohibited by state regulations.

The Ministry also extended condolences to Ariyo’s family in a letter from the Permanent Secretary, which praised the student as an exceptional learner and pledged support in seeking justice. The state’s Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) added that other students had been disciplined alongside Ariyo and noted that he had disclosed a prior motorbike accident after regaining consciousness.
