The Education and Empowerment Centre for Women (EECW) organized a STEM workshop for 60 female students from Southern Kaduna to inspire and equip them in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Held at Government Girls’ College, Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, the initiative is part of the Laraba Deyjih Science Innovation Prize for Girls, honoring the legacy of Mrs. Laraba Akpason.

According to EECW Program Officer Benjamin Dankaka, the project aims to provide young girls in rural areas with essential STEM skills, bridging educational gaps in science and technology.

STEM education in Nigeria faces challenges, especially in rural areas, where limited resources and trained educators restrict opportunities for students.

The workshop encouraged young girls to explore STEM through hands-on activities and introduced them to resource-sharing clubs for support. Swanta Bonat, from Educational Check, praised the workshop’s impact, noting it empowered students with new perspectives and learning strategies to pursue STEM careers.

Community leaders and local school administrators welcomed the event, which included a STEM Club starter kit and certificates for participants. Dorcas Silas, an SS2 student, expressed gratitude, saying the workshop sparked her interest in the sciences. The program is expected to expand across Southern Kaduna, further supporting students and uplifting education standards in the region.
