The Ogun State Government has closed Obada Grammar School in Idi-Emi, Obada, following the death of SS2 student Monday Arijo, allegedly due to corporal punishment administered by a teacher.

The incident led to the teacher’s arrest and suspension, as well as the suspension of the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, for allegedly allowing corporal punishment against state regulations.

Governor Dapo Abiodun directed that a panel be established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, with assurances that those found responsible will face legal consequences.

On behalf of the Ogun State Government, a delegation from the Ministry of Education visited Arijo’s family to offer condolences and collect accounts of the incident to aid in the investigation.

The delegation, which included high-ranking education officials, trade union representatives, and school administrators, expressed their commitment to both justice and enhanced student safety measures. In support, the state provided a condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000 to the family.

During the visit, the officials reiterated the government’s dedication to student welfare and a safe school environment. They pledged transparency in the investigation process, while the local DPO assured the family of their support and safety for students.
