Dr. Omowumi Olabode Steven Ekundayo, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has called on the university to lift his suspension, pay his withheld salaries, and confirm his pending promotion following his recent acquittal in a sexual assault case.

After a three-year legal battle, an Edo State High Court in Benin City discharged and acquitted Dr. Ekundayo, who had been accused of assaulting a female student in 2021. Speaking with journalists in Benin City, Dr. Ekundayo emphasized his readiness to resume his academic role and highlighted his eligibility for promotion, stating, “UNIBEN authorities should lift my suspension… and announce my promotion to Professor, which is already due.”

The legal proceedings concluded with Justice Mary Itsueli upholding a no-case submission from the defense, citing insufficient evidence from the prosecution, including the absence of a medical report from UNIBEN’s Health Center. Dr. Ekundayo criticized the university’s handling of the case, expressing that the ordeal caused significant emotional and financial strain. He noted, “They should pay my withheld salaries… I had a close shave with death by suicide, depression, and even amnesia.”

Reflecting on the case, Dr. Ekundayo extended gratitude to supporters and expressed hope for reconciliation with UNIBEN. He indicated potential legal action for damages depending on the university’s response but affirmed he would seek no personal revenge, stating, “Victory is the sweetest revenge, and I already have it. You reflect to the world who you truly are.”
