Former Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, challenged Miva Open University’s leadership and students to prioritize critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they redefine higher education in Nigeria.

Osinbajo shared these insights during his keynote address at the university’s 2024 Matriculation Ceremony in Abuja, where approximately 3,000 students were matriculated into 14 undergraduate programs.

Highlighting the growing need for adaptable, tech-savvy graduates, Osinbajo noted that today’s employers seek innovative, collaborative employees who can tackle real-world issues. He pointed out the traditional education model’s limitations, as about 1.3 million eligible students remain without access to university placements each year due to infrastructure constraints.

“There is absolutely no way that a brick-and-mortar approach to providing infrastructure for university education can ever work,” he asserted, commending Miva Open University as a forward-thinking solution for expanding educational access.

Miva’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tayo Arulogun, encouraged students to leverage the university’s focus on skills, knowledge, and digital proficiency to prepare for the global economy. Prof. Chuks Ekwueme, newly inducted as a Professor of Practice in Computer Science, urged students to work hard, while matriculant Emmanuel Imoh-Abasi praised the university’s flexibility, which allows her to balance studies with other ventures.
