In an effort to promote sustainability, stakeholders at the recent Stakeholders Review and Validation Meetings for the Draft National Framework of the National Green Schools Project have called for the adoption of green practices across schools in Nigeria.

The meeting highlighted the need for schools to engage in environmental initiatives, including the establishment of orchards, waste management systems, renewable energy use, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture through Green Clubs known as Green Schools Champions.

The communique issued after the meeting emphasized that teachers, school leaders, and key stakeholders will undergo capacity-building programs to ensure effective implementation.

It also noted the importance of partnerships with private organizations, NGOs, and international partners to provide resources, share best practices, and broaden the reach of the project. Schools will also work closely with local communities to enhance grassroots participation in sustainability initiatives.

The framework, validated by the stakeholders, includes a plan for monitoring and evaluating the progress of the Green Schools Project, which is proposed for national launch on October 29, 2024. The communique was signed by key representatives, including Unyime Robinson, National Project Coordinator, along with officials from the Federal Ministries of Environment and Education, NUC, UBEC, and other education and environmental bodies.
