Professor Jendele Hungbo, an expert in Comparative Media Studies at Kola Daisi University, Ibadan, has urged society to prevent the misuse and misinterpretation of media for Africa’s progress. Speaking at the university’s inaugural lecture themed “Metaphors of the Self: New Epistemological Landscapes in African Media,” Hungbo emphasized the pervasive exploitation of media in Nigeria and Africa for personal gain, often leading to distorted portrayals of individuals and events.

Hungbo highlighted the critical need for comprehensive media literacy programs to address this issue. He pointed out that media messages often act as metaphors, requiring citizens to develop skills to critically interpret these messages to understand their deeper implications. Such programs, he noted, must be technologically driven and infrastructure-supported to ensure equitable media education across diverse regions, leveling the information playing field for learners everywhere.

Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, the university’s Vice Chancellor, praised Hungbo’s insights, calling the lecture a significant academic milestone for Kola Daisi University. He commended Hungbo for his dedication to using media to foster national development, while the event drew a distinguished audience of academics, university officials, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders.
