The House Committee on Polytechnics and Other Higher Technical Education has called on federal polytechnics across Nigeria to produce skilled experts capable of tapping into the nation’s abundant natural resources. During an oversight session held in Abuja with rectors from several federal polytechnics, Committee Chairman Fuad Kayode Laguda (APC-Lagos) emphasized the need for educational programs that prepare students to maximize local resources and contribute to national development.

The session included rectors from Federal Polytechnic Kauran-Namoda in Zamfara, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo in Gombe, and Federal Polytechnic Bali in Taraba. Mr. Laguda urged the institutions to introduce courses aligned with the resources in their respective regions. For instance, he suggested that Federal Polytechnic Kauran-Namoda offer programs in Geology and Mining, which would enable students to develop expertise in mineral extraction and other related fields, addressing local challenges and creating job opportunities.

Mr. Laguda highlighted the importance of maintaining high academic standards to produce top-tier graduates. He expressed confidence that well-trained students could make impactful contributions to society and attract more youth to pursue polytechnic education. By focusing on excellence, the polytechnics could help address skills gaps in various industries and build a stronger workforce for the nation.

The chairman further noted the financial benefits for polytechnics, pointing out that programs in areas like mining could generate additional revenue through services such as mineral testing. He encouraged the polytechnics to innovate and respond to present-day needs, stressing that the success of their graduates would reflect positively on the institutions and lead to broader societal benefits.
