Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, have raised concerns over threats to their lives amidst an ongoing crisis over the position of Vice Chancellor.
The university, which has been in turmoil since the expiration of Prof. Charles Esimone’s tenure in June, is currently led by Prof. Bernard Odoh, who is opposed by ASUU members and over 400 professors due to claims that he is not a professor but a doctor.
Reports suggest that senior professors have been followed by gunmen, and suspicious vehicles have been spotted near the ASUU secretariat. Members of the union have reportedly gone into hiding, with academic activities at the university halted. ASUU has petitioned the police and other security agencies for assistance in addressing the escalating threats.
