The Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH) at Redeemer’s University has made history by sequencing a full human genome in Nigeria for the first time.

This breakthrough, the first of its kind in Africa using Illumina’s NovaSeq X Plus sequencer, will help scientists study African genetic diversity and ancestry. Professor Christian Happi, the IGH Director, said it marks a big step forward for science in Africa.

The new technology allows researchers to sequence over 20,000 human genomes each year, helping to understand diseases and develop better treatments. It also supports training for African scientists in advanced genomics, big data, and artificial intelligence.

IGH’s success shows Africa’s growing role in global genetic research and its potential to transform healthcare.
