The Founder of Green Schools International Foundation, Mr. Unyime Robinson, has praised the commitments made by ministers at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, to strengthen efforts on greening education. These commitments, made during a High-Level Meeting organized by UNESCO and Azerbaijan’s Ministries, highlight the role of education in combating climate change and fostering climate resilience.

Robinson, also the National Project Coordinator for the Greening Schools Project in Nigeria, urged world leaders to move from pledges to concrete actions. He called for increased political and financial support for education reforms focused on green transitions, research, and innovation.

Nigeria, a member of the Greening Education Partnership (GEP), has already developed a National Implementation Framework for its Greening Schools Project, which aligns with UNESCO’s Green Schools Quality Standards. This framework aims to transform schools into centers of sustainability, innovation, and community engagement.

Pilot programs are underway in three Abuja schools—Federal Science & Technical College, Orozo; Government Secondary School, Wuse Zone 3; and Police Secondary School, Dei Dei. Activities include eco-club inaugurations, tree planting, and green curriculum integration.

At COP29, for the first time in its history, education took center stage. Ministers from GEP member nations pledged to advance education reforms for climate resilience through cross-sector collaboration in education, environment, and youth development.
