The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Monday, December 16, 2024, approved the renaming of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) after former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd). The decision, made during a meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu, recognizes General Gowon’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s unity and progress.

Announcing the decision, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris highlighted the enduring legacy of the former Head of State, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday. “This decision reflects the government’s appreciation for the remarkable leadership and service General Gowon provided during a critical time in our nation’s history. FEC has taken that decision to write to the National Assembly to change the name of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University,” he said.

Established in 1988, the University of Abuja was the first in Nigeria to operate with a dual mandate of conventional and distance learning programs. The institution has played a vital role in expanding access to higher education in the country. Renaming it after General Gowon honors his historic leadership, especially his efforts to preserve Nigeria’s unity during the civil war from 1967 to 1970, when he served as Head of State from 1966 to 1975.

The renaming has been met with widespread support from Nigerians and organizations, who describe it as a fitting tribute to the elder statesman. Advocates are urging the National Assembly to expedite approval of the name change, citing Gowon’s contributions as a symbol of unity, integrity, and commitment to the nation’s development.
