Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has declared that his administration will not tolerate any pupil sitting on the floor during lessons in the state’s schools. Addressing the 2nd annual Primary School Teachers Vacation Course at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, the governor emphasized his commitment to addressing challenges in the education sector.

Dr. Idris revealed that over ₦19 billion has been allocated to various educational projects, including constructing mega schools, renovating classrooms, and providing furniture across all 21 Local Government Areas of the state. He affirmed, “I am a teacher, and the pain of every teacher and child is also my pain. Seeing any child sitting on the floor is unacceptable, and we are taking all necessary steps to prevent this.”

Key projects under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) include constructing laboratories, ICT centers, hostels, and classrooms, as well as procuring furniture, books, computers, and sports equipment. The governor also announced ongoing plans to recruit 2,000 teachers, with the screening committee’s report under review for approval.

SUBEB Chairman, Professor Suleiman Khalid, stated that 789 classrooms have been renovated, with over 16,500 units of school furniture provided. By the end of 2025, 1,182 classrooms will have been fully refurbished. Rector of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Dr. Usman Sani Tunga, commended the government for its partnership in teacher retraining, while the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halima Bande, highlighted the significant investments in education aimed at creating an enabling learning environment.
