The Kano State Government has inaugurated a 14-member committee to review existing education policies as part of efforts to address challenges in the sector. The move follows the state’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in education, aimed at revitalizing the system to meet current and future needs. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Kano Educational Resource Department Conference Hall on Wednesday and was presided over by the State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
In his address, Dr. Makoda highlighted the significance of the committee in tackling systemic issues undermining educational progress in Kano. “This initiative marks a significant step in our quest to tackle the challenges undermining educational development. We trust the expertise of the committee members to provide actionable recommendations,” he stated. The committee’s mandate includes aligning education policies with Kano’s cultural and religious values, evaluating the feasibility of their implementation, and proposing strategies to strengthen the education system.
Key policies under review include the Kano State Girls’ Education Policy, the Gender Equity and Social Inclusion Policy, the Non-State School Policy, and the Teacher Development Policy. Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Kabiru Haruna, the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, reiterated that these policies are crucial for fostering inclusivity, accessibility, and quality in Kano’s education sector.
Chaired by Malam Abdullahi Muhammad Dutse, the committee comprises scholars, government officials, civil society representatives, and members of the Emirate Council. Dutse assured the state government of the committee’s commitment to delivering a comprehensive report within three weeks. “We are dedicated to fulfilling this critical assignment and ensuring that our recommendations will guide the transformation of Kano’s education system,” he affirmed. The initiative underscores the state’s renewed focus on addressing educational challenges and fostering long-term development.
