The Kwara State Government has issued a stern warning to proprietors of private coaching centres, urging them to stop poaching students from public schools under the guise of preparing them for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). The government expressed concerns over the increasing trend of students abandoning their schools to enroll in these centres, a practice it described as detrimental to the education sector.

According to the State Commissioner for Education, many of these coaching centres operate without proper accreditation and offer substandard learning environments that do not meet official educational standards. He emphasized that public schools in the state have qualified teachers and adequate resources to prepare students for their examinations, making it unnecessary for students to leave their schools for external coaching centres.

The government further warned that strict measures would be taken against any coaching centre found to be illegally recruiting students from public schools. Parents were also urged to prioritize formal education over short-term coaching arrangements, as excessive reliance on unregulated tutorial centres could affect students’ academic performance and discipline.

In addition, the Ministry of Education has launched a monitoring initiative to identify and sanction defaulting coaching centres. The government reaffirmed its commitment to improving public school education and called for stronger collaboration between schools, parents, and relevant stakeholders to ensure students receive quality education within the formal school system.
