President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Tai town, Ogoniland, Rivers State. During the signing ceremony at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering the Ogoni people and ensuring environmental justice and sustainable development. He described the university as a significant step toward addressing historical grievances and expanding opportunities for learning and economic growth in the Niger Delta region.
The president noted that for decades, the Ogoni people have championed the fight for environmental restoration and sustainability, shaping national and global discussions on these issues. He assured the Ogoni delegation that their advocacy for justice would not go unrecognized, pledging more government support for the region. He urged all stakeholders—including traditional institutions, academia, and the private sector—to embrace the university as a symbol of progress and knowledge. The institution, he stated, would serve as a center of excellence, training young Nigerians to address environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions, and contribute to national development.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that FUET would focus on interdisciplinary programs in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology, ensuring that students are equipped to tackle regional and national ecological challenges. Also, National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, highlighted that the university’s establishment was part of the government’s broader efforts to restore Ogoniland and integrate it into national development strategies. Senator Mpigi Barinada, leader of the Ogoni delegation, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, commending the contributions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the NSA in facilitating the bill’s passage.
The signing of the FUET bill follows President Tinubu’s recent approval of another federal university in Southern Kaduna, reinforcing his commitment to balanced educational opportunities across Nigeria. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, described the move as a demonstration of Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which seeks to correct past injustices and promote national inclusivity. Bwala noted that Tinubu believes in a united Nigeria, where all ethnic groups are equally valued, and the establishment of FUET is a testament to his administration’s push for equitable development.
