The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has announced the release of the results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, second series.
In a statement, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyo Adesina, revealed that for the first time, the examination was conducted in two modes: the traditional paper-and-pen format and a computer-based hybrid option. This innovation provided candidates with greater flexibility in their examination choices.
A total of 68,342 candidates registered for the examination, reflecting a 20% decrease compared to the 2023 figure. Of these, 65,023 candidates sat for the exams across 5,067 centers nationwide.
Performance Breakdown
- Out of the candidates who sat for the examination, 34,878 (53.64%) obtained credit in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
- Additionally, 43,923 candidates (67.55%) secured credit or above in a minimum of five subjects, whether or not English Language and Mathematics were included.
- There was a 9.35% improvement in performance compared to the 2022 and 2023 results, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance educational and examination standards.
Gender Distribution Among the 65,023 candidates who participated:
- 31,504 (48.45%) were male.
- 33,519 (51.55%) were female.
Result Processing and Special Needs Candidates
- A total of 62,354 candidates (95.90%) had their results fully processed and released.
- However, 2,669 candidates (4.10%) have pending results due to discrepancies currently being addressed.
- The examination also accommodated 157 candidates with special needs, including 25 visually impaired, 13 with hearing impairments, and 15 albino candidates.
Examination Malpractice
- The results of 2,577 candidates (3.96%) were withheld due to various allegations of examination malpractice.

Accessing Results Candidates can check their results online at www.waecdirect.org and obtain digital certificates via the WAEC digital certificate platform at www.waec.org.
