In a bold move to strengthen the educational system and eradicate so-called ‘miracle centres,’ the Federal Government has launched a comprehensive nationwide on-the-spot monitoring of public and private schools. This initiative, directed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, aligns with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration’s commitment to ensuring that all schools in Nigeria maintain minimum facilities and a conducive learning environment.
The monitoring exercise aims to assess the quality of education offered in schools and eliminate institutions known as ‘miracle centres’—schools notorious for promoting examination malpractice. By enforcing strict quality standards, the government seeks to restore integrity in the educational system and promote genuine academic excellence.
Deputy Director of the Quality Assurance Department at the Federal Ministry of Education, Rukayat Ibrahim, led a team on one of these assessments at Redeemers Teap International School, Garki, Abuja. After inspecting the school, Rukayat emphasized the importance of the exercise in putting schools on the right track, ensuring they meet educational standards.
“This on-the-spot assessment is a day-long exercise, usually completed within two to three hours. Our objective is to cover as many schools as possible,” Rukayat explained. Unlike previous lengthy reports and reforms, the outcomes of this initiative will be concise, making it easier for decision-makers to act swiftly.
The monitoring exercise is happening simultaneously across the country, targeting both public and private schools at primary and secondary levels. This proactive approach underscores the government’s resolve to improve the quality of education nationwide and build a foundation for sustainable academic growth.
