Lagos, Nigeria – Tragedy struck on Monday along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway as a driver, yet to be identified, struck two female siblings returning from school. The incident occurred at Ogundare bus stop when the driver, who was reportedly plying the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane at high speed, hit the young girls.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the accident took place at approximately 3:35 p.m.

“On Monday, February 24, 2025 at about 1535hrs, a yet-to-be-identified driver, while plying the BRT lane on high speed at Ogundare bus-stop along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, hit two female pedestrians, siblings aged 12 and 15, on their way back from school,” the statement read.

Emergency responders quickly evacuated the injured girls to Orile Agege General Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, the 12-year-old succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment. The 15-year-old victim, who sustained severe injuries, was later transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for further care.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare M. Jimoh, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is already underway.

“A speedy, detailed, and conclusive investigation has since commenced,” the commissioner stated. “I urge all road users, particularly motorists, to strictly comply with traffic rules, speed limits, and safe driving practices.”

The Lagos State Police Command has pledged to ensure that justice is served and called for public cooperation in providing any information that may assist in identifying the driver responsible for the tragic incident.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about road safety and adherence to traffic regulations in Lagos State, with authorities emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement to prevent further tragedies.
